【브레이크뉴스 】오주호 기자=경북지역 초·중·고등학교 석면 제거율이 전국에서 ‘최하위권’을 기록했다.

 

국회 교육위원회 소속 국민의힘 김병욱 의원(포항남·울릉군)이 3일 17개 시·도교육청으로부터 제출받은 자료에 따르면 전국 석면제거 대상 학교 1만6천670곳 중 석면이 제거된 학교가 8천425곳(50.5%)만 제거된 것으로 나타났다.

 

침묵의 살인자로 불리는 석면은 유연성과 열에 대한 저항력이 강하고, 가격이 저렴해 건축 내·외장재와 공업용 원료 등으로 널리 사용되어 왔다.

 

하지만 지난 1987년 세계보건기구 산하 국제암연구소로부터 석면이 폐암, 악성중피종 등을 유발하는 1군 발암물질로 지정되면서 프랑스, 일본 등 전 세계 65개국에서 석면사용을 금지하고 있다.

 

국내에서도 2009년부터 모든 제품에 석면사용을 금지하고, 각 급 학교에서 석면제거 사업을 추진하고 있다.

 

경북지역의 경우 대상 학교 1천437곳 중 석면이 제거된 학교는 436곳(30.3%)에 그치며 경남(27.5%)과 최하위권을 형성했다.

반면 대구(61.5%)는 세종(84%), 제주(75.3%), 부산(69.1%), 광주(68.6%), 전북(65.6%), 강원(64.2%) 등의 뒤를 이으며 상위권에 이름을 올렸다.

 

전체 석면제거 대상 학교 1만6천670곳 중 석면이 제거된 학교는 8,425개교에 불과해 했다. 제거해야 할 면적을 살펴보면 전체 42,017,577㎡중 24,493,883㎡(58.2%)만 제거된 상황이다.

 

김병욱 의원은“아이들에게 질 높은 교육을 제공하는 것도 중요하지만, 안전하고 쾌적하게 생활할 수 있는 환경을 만드는 것 또한 매우 중요하다”며 “석면제거 예산을 최대한 집행해 사업의 속도를 높여 학생들의 안전을 확보할 필요가 있다”고 말했다.
