Gyeongdaesa University High School won the Gold Prize at the 17th Chemical Exploration Frontier Festival

【Break News Daegu】 Reporter Seong-Hyeon Lee = Kyungpook National University Normal University Affiliated High School (Principal Sang-ho So, hereinafter referred to as Kyungdae University High School) at the 17th Chemical Exploration Frontier Festival final contest held online on Aug. 22 (Shin Ji-yeon, 2nd year) , Jeongwon Lee, and Adviser Hyewon Shin) announced on the 16th that they received the Gold Award.

Of the 67 teams nationwide, 53 teams were special high schools, and Gyeongdaesa Daebu High School was a general high school, but showed the best skills compared to special high schools.

The team name expressed the will to solve the harmfulness of the red pigment in lipstick with'red taste'. Students who found a problem in life that there are many red crab shells that were eaten and discarded during mealtime and that the red pigment in red lipstick causes skin troubles, the students said,'How about replacing the red pigment in lipstick with the red color of the red crab shell?' In order to verify the idea, we conducted'Explore Eco-friendly Derma Cosmetics Using Thrown Red Crab Shells'.

Astaxanthin pigment in discarded red crab shells is a heat-stable red pigment, which proves that it can replace artificial red pigment in existing lipsticks. Through this, the risk of carcinogenesis and skin problems caused by artificial pigments was reduced, and at the same time, the problem of landfill of red crab shells classified as general waste was solved. In recognition of its logic and scientific creativity in the process of conducting experiments and drawing conclusions, it was awarded the Gold Prize (5th among 67 teams nationwide).

The winners, Jiyeon Shin and Jeongwon Lee, are students who are interested in science and engineering science and dream of becoming a chemistry and biomedical fusion researcher and an engineer who collects big data and develops algorithms. The two students, who conducted research and study at lunchtime, after school, on weekends and public holidays, said, “There were cases where the interpretation of the experimental data was difficult, but through the logical solution process, I gained confidence.

I hope there will be more opportunities for Korean students to design and verify their own experiments.” Teacher Hye-won Shin, who guided them, has been helping students in the process of scientifically solving their questions by conducting practical inquiry classes since 2017.

Principal So Sang-ho of Gyeongdaesa University High School said, “The reason why we received the Gold Prize at a general high school that lacks experimental equipment is due to the dedication of the instructor and the enthusiasm for the students' inquiry. I was able to reaffirm the potential of Sadaebu High School, a leader in science education in Daegu. As an IB (International Baccalaureate) leading school in the 2021 school year, I look forward to more active scientific inquiry activities.”

The awards ceremony of the 17th Chemical Exploration Frontier Festival is scheduled to be held at Lotte Hotel Seoul on October 30th.
