Daegu Regional Environmental Office, Mungyeong Dole Wetland, first harvesting event for eco-friendly crops

[Break News Daegu] Reporter Lee Seong-hyun = Daegu Regional Environment Agency (Director Ju Dae-young) announced on the 29th that it will hold the first harvesting event in eco-friendly rice fields cultivated using traditional farming methods in the Mungyeong Dole Wetland Protected Area.

This event is part of an eco-friendly rice paddy farming project promoted by the Daegu Regional Environment Office to restore the traditional landscape of Mungyeong Doline wetland and promote biodiversity.

The Mungyeong Doline wetland paddy farming project, which started in May of this year, was promoted by an eco-friendly farming method that excludes the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the area of 3,075 m2 of fallow land, with local residents including Doone Village and Mungyeong YMCA.

According to experts who participated in the detailed survey of the Mungyeong Doline wetland ecosystem this year at the National Institute of Ecology, an endangered class 2 species waterfowl was discovered for the first time this year, which was not observed in monitoring in 2018-2019 near eco-friendly farmlands, and the population of various species such as grasshoppers and dragonflies compared to previous years. Appeared to increase.

The event will be held in the following order: traditional harvest and threshing event, traditional culture experience activity, eco-friendly harvest donation ceremony, and wild animal feeding.

In the traditional harvest and threshing event, the Mungyeong YMCA Women's Volunteer Corps, local residents of Doline wetland, and students of Sanbuk Middle School participate in reproducing traditional harvesting methods, such as cutting rice using a sickle and cutting ears with a sickle.

Residents of the village of Ugok-ri run traditional cultural experiences such as pigtailing, making rice straw egg packs, and making rice cakes, providing visitors to the Mungyeong Doine Wetland with a variety of farming experiences and rich attractions.

The harvested eco-friendly rice is donated to the Mungyeong City Social Welfare Center to convey condolences to local neighbors suffering from Corona 19. Some are planning to use it as a food source for wild animals during the cold winter season.

“I hope this event will serve as an opportunity to raise awareness of the conservation of the Mungyeong Doline wetland, which is a treasure trove of biodiversity,” said Joo Dae-young, head of the Daegu Regional Environment Agency. “We will continue to actively collaborate with local residents for the conservation and wise use of Mungyeong Doline wetland. I will do it.”
