Poet Lee Sang-hwa's folding screen comes to Daegu

[Break News Daegu] Reporter Lee Seong-hyun = Daegu City announced on the 1st that a folding screen containing the stories of artists who had exchanged mainly in Daegu with poet Lee Sang-hwa during the Japanese colonial period will be donated to Daegu City.

The folding screen donated to the city of Daegu is a 10-fold folding screen containing “Gogokdam Poetry in Mt. Geumgang”, and is a calligraphy work written by Seo Dong-gyun (1903-1978) as a haengcho. In the last width of the screen, there is a written message written by Dong-gyun Seo in 1932 and presented to Kim Jeong-gyu (1899-1974) by the poet Lee Sang-hwa (1901-1943). It is a rare example of a calligraphy work that clearly recorded the story related to the year of production.

The screening public event will be held at 10:30 am on December 3 at the Daegu Museum of Art, and Daegu City Administration Vice Mayor Chae Hong-ho, donors Kim Jong-hae (son of the former owner), Lee Won-ho (director of Lee Sang-hwa Memorial Hall), and the director of the Daegu Museum of Art will attend. At this event, a plaque of appreciation is presented along with a donation of a screen.

Kim Jong-hae (born in Daegu in 1938), who donated the folding screen to Daegu City, is the third son of Pohae Kim Jeong-gyu, who received this work as a gift from poet Lee Sang-hwa. Kim Jong-hae decided to donate this folding screen, which was cherished by his father in his lifetime, to Daegu, the hometown of Lee Sang-hwa, and contacted Daegu City directly, and the Daegu City Culture and Arts Archive team immediately checked the work and went through the donation procedure quickly.

Lee Sang-hwa is a national poet in the modern era, and Dong-gyun Seo is also a representative calligrapher and ink painter in Daegu who was active throughout the modern and well-known period. Pohae Kim Jeong-gyu, from Hapcheon patrol, worked in Daegu and was a member of the Daegu Labor Mutual Aid Association in 1924. After studying in Japan, he studied at Chuo University and Meiji University, led the independence movement, and was also a governor of the nation.

When this folding screen was produced in 1932, Seo Dong-gyun was 30 years old, Lee Sang-hwa was 32 years old, and Kim Jeong-gyu was 34 years old. These were all young elites of Daegu who did not lose their national spirit during the dark period of the loss of the country during the Japanese colonial period, but the fact that they were intimate was not known in detail.

Lee Sang-hwa and Lee Sang-hwa had a great relationship with Seo Dong-gyun enough to ask for a masterpiece of 10 widths, and Kim Jeong-gyu is a person who deserves such a masterpiece from Lee Sang-hwa. Lee Sang-hwa is a publishing secretary of the Shinganhoe Daegu branch, and was imprisoned at the Daegu Police Station for being involved in a case to raise funds for the independence movement. .

Mr. Kim Jong-hae said, “My father loved the screen as a gift from the poet Sang-hwa. He liked it enough to write along the poems of Gugokdam on Mount Geumgang while watching the folding screen. Even after my father died in 1974, I kept it at home, and I thought that Daegu, the hometown of Sanghwa poet, was the place to store this work, and I contacted after hearing the news that Daegu City was building a culture and art archive.”

Calligraphy researcher Dr. In-sook Lee (adjunct professor at Kyungpook National University) said, “This screen is important in that it is a relic that informs Lee Sang-hwa's thoughts about the country, relations, and cultural activities, one of the greatest assets held by Daegu during the Japanese colonial period. It is clear that this is an important work that can faithfully expand the modern cultural landscape with a story related to Lee Sang-hwa and enrich the narrative of the characters who were active in Daegu in the modern era.”

Chae Hong-ho, the vice mayor of Daegu City's administration, said, “I would like to thank the son of Pohae Kim Jeong-gyu, who received this work directly from Lee Sang-hwa, for visiting Daegu, the hometown of Lee Sang-hwa, and donating it with a pure heart in honor of the exchange of his predecessors. I think there will be a lot of talk if you unravel the story of this folding screen. With this donation, I look forward to continuing research on the exchange of modern artists and the independence movement.”
