대구대 국제처(처장 이동춘)는 매년 연말이면 외국인 유학생들을 격려하기 위해 한국어 말하기 대회, 장기자랑 경연대회 등으로 구성된 외국인 유학생의 날 행사를 진행해 왔다.

하지만 올해는 코로나19로 외국인 유학생의 날 행사가 취소되면서 이 행사를 위해 책정된 예산을 활용해 어학 연수생, 학부생 등 1,000여 명에게 마스크와 라면, 치약 등의 물품을 전달했다.

베트남에서 유학 온 황티후에 학생(관광경영학과, 3학년)은 “원래 유학 생활이 경제적으로 넉넉지 않았는데 코로나19까지 겹치면서 더욱 생활이 어려워졌다”며 “학교에서 많은 유학생의 어려움을 알고 이렇게 세심하게 신경 써 주셔서 감사드린다”고 말했다.

앞서 대구대는 외국인 유학생에게 등록금의 10%를 코로나 장학금으로 지급하고 마스크 등 방역 물품을 제공하는 등 학생들이 안정적인 유학 생활을 해나갈 수 있도록 힘쓰고 있다.

이동춘 대구대 국제처장은 “이번 지원이 코로나19로 인해 힘든 환경 속에서도 꿋꿋이 한국 생활을 해나가고 있는 외국인 유학생들에게 작은 보탬이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
