Construction of the “Wolseong Excavation and Operation Facility” in connection with the Special Law of the Silla Wanggyeong...Starts construction this month, completes in January next year

Construction of a “Wolseong Excavation and Operation Facility” with a gross floor area of 1871m2 on a site near Gyochon Hanok Village with a project cost of 7.5 billion

[Break News Gyeongju] Reporter Park Young-jae = The construction of a “Wolseong Excavation and Research Operation Facility”, promoted by Gyeongju City and operated by the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, is cruising.

According to the city of Gyeongju on the 28th, the construction project of the'Wolseong Excavation and Operation Facility' is a total project cost of KRW 7.5 billion (70% of national expenses and 30% of local expenses) with a total area of 1871m2 and a total area of 18,700m2 in the area of 407 Hwangnam-dong adjacent to Gyochon Hanok Village It is erected.

This project is a linkage project of the “Silla Royal Gyeonggi Special Act” to restore and rearrange the eight core ruins of the Silla royal palace.

Inside the facility, there will be a △excavated artifact exhibition hall, a seminar room, a storage facility, a research room, and an attached parking lot.

The city conducted an excavation survey through the Shilla Cultural Heritage Research Institute in November of the same year after approval of the shape change by the Cultural Heritage Administration in October 2018, and received final approval for the building design of the Cultural Heritage Administration in April last year.

After that, as the city council's approval of the change in the shared property management plan is completed, the construction will begin on the 15th of this month and will be completed and opened in January of next year.

The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration is in charge of project progress and operation, and Gyeongju City has the authority to manage and supervise the project.

As facilities are built in the vicinity of Gyochon Village, Gyeongju City adopted a design plan that reinterpreted Hanok in a modern way in consideration of the convenience of users while harmonizing with the surroundings.

In particular, it is expected that it will be easier to operate a civic learning program through a seminar room, and to study and store relics excavated from the Silla Royal Palace through storage and research rooms.

The city of Gyeongju expects that once this facility is opened, it will serve as the so-called “Silla Royal Palace Excavated Relics Exhibition Hall” that can reveal the results of research and exhibitions of artifacts excavated during the excavation process of the Silla Royal Palace.

Gyeongju Mayor Nak-yeong Joo said, “It is a project to create an exhibition space for excavated relics, as well as systematic and professional research according to the Wolseong excavation survey, which is expected to take a long time. The landscape around Jeonggyo will be greatly improved, making it a new attraction in the area.”
