Gyeongsangbuk-do releases 50,000 young catfish to create fishery resources

Gyeongsangbuk-do Local Fish Industry Center announced on the 4th that it will release 50,000 young catfish by the end of June this year to increase the income of fishermen and foster industrialization by creating inland fish resources such as major dams and reservoirs in the province.

As part of this plan, 20,000 young catfish were released for the first time on the 4th at the Jungha Reservoir located in Ansa-myeon, Uiseong-gun, in the presence of local councilors and local residents.

The juvenile catfish released this time are healthy juvenile catfish that have been bred for about 3 months by natural spawning and artificial eggs from their mother catfish in April and tested for infectious diseases of aquatic organisms with a total length of 7 to 9 cm. After the investigation, we plan to create resources in the desired release area.

Catfish inhabits all waters including dams and reservoirs in Korea, and is a high-quality fish preferred by all people, such as maeuntang and steamed fish. It is thought that it will contribute to the recovery of fishery resources in inland waters and increase the income of fishermen by releasing them free of charge.

The Local Fish Industry Center plans to continuously expand and release native fish species such as carp, crucian carp, and gecko, and urged all residents to manage illegal fishing so that the young catfish released this time can grow well.

“We plan to do our best to accelerate the creation of inland water resources through mass production and release of high-quality varieties while restoring ecosystems such as dams, reservoirs, and rivers in the province at an early stage,” said Seong-won Moon, head of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Fisheries Research Institute.
