Prof. Cheol-Hong Kim's research team at POSTECH developed a portable photoacoustic detector

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) is a solid-state dye laser and transparent ultrasonic transformer through joint research with Wontech Co. It was announced on the 25th that it has developed a non-radiative portable photoacoustic finder combined with a TUT.

Unlike conventional gamma probes that use radioactive materials, portable photoacoustic detectors do not require radioactive materials, so there is no risk of exposure to radiation, and they do not require special facilities, so they can be used inexpensively several times. This research result was published in the international academic journal 'Photoacoustics (top 0.78% in the field of systems)'.

In general, a biopsy of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) around the cancer is performed to determine whether the cancer has metastasized, such as breast cancer or melanoma. This is because the SLN is the first gateway for tumors to travel to the lymph nodes. However, since the existing biopsy uses radioactive materials to find SLN, there is a risk of radiation exposure to patients and doctors, and it is difficult to proceed in general hospitals because special facilities are required for the treatment of radioactive materials.

The research team coaxially used a round-shaped focal-type transparent ultrasonic transducer (a device that converts electrical signals into ultrasonic waves or receives ultrasonic waves into electrical signals) on a solid dye laser handpiece (a medical laser commonly used for skin treatment in dermatology). combined with A photoacoustic signal is generated when a laser is irradiated to a colored area, and this signal is detected by an ultrasonic transducer.

Existing ultrasonic transducers are opaque, making coaxial coupling with lasers impossible. However, using the transparent ultrasonic transducer technology possessed by this research team, a laser and an ultrasonic transducer are coaxially coupled to one small handpiece to easily detect photoacoustic signals.

As a result, the research team successfully found the rat axillary SLN under the chicken breast using a photoacoustic detector after injecting blue dye into the rat. In addition, it was confirmed that a chicken breast was placed on a rat subcutaneously injected with melanoma (malignant skin cancer) and melanoma was detected using a photoacoustic detector, and it could be used to detect colored malignant tumors.

Professor Cheol-Hong Kim of POSTECH, who led the research, said, “The photoacoustic detector (PAF) system we developed is the first portable photoacoustic detection tool to detect sentinel lymph nodes.” It is expected to be of great help in detecting ovarian cancer or melanoma.”

Meanwhile, this research was carried out with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Research Foundation of Korea for basic science research and international R&D programs, the POSCO project, and the BK21 FOUR project.
