POSTECH , AI-using lecture automation system development

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) announced on the 1st that a joint research team of Professor Hong Dae-geun and Lim Chang-hee of the Graduate School of Steel and Energy Materials developed an automated lecture system using artificial intelligence (AI).

This system is currently being applied to POSCO's Gwangyang Steelworks 2nd Steel 2nd Circuit, and is accelerating smart factory innovation.

Just as the cup is slowly tilted to filter out impurities to remove impurities in the cup, tapping is a process of slowly filtering out slag floating in the converter. Until now, the tapping method required the operator to manually perform this operation dozens of times every day while visually checking it in a high-temperature and high-temperature working environment. As a result, product ingredients or minute quality deviations occurred depending on the skill level of the workers, and it was difficult to quantify the data. In addition, due to the nature of high-temperature work, it was inevitably exposed to safety accidents.

The research team performed image analysis research in collaboration with the POSCO Research Institute and the steelmaking department of Gwangyang Works to automate the converter taping. Using the dart (refractory) input image and SDS (Slag Detection System) image that are collected in real time through CCTV, deep learning-based automatic judging technology has been developed.

First, the work was subdivided into stages, data for each condition was collected and standardized, and then the attendance pattern was derived. Based on the extracted steel tapping pattern, it is possible to determine the timing of inserting darts to prevent ferroalloy and slag leakage through deep learning, and the process is automatically completed until the end of the tapping, thereby reducing the deviation between workers. In addition, through AI image recognition technology, it is now possible to detect dangers caused by high-temperature work without directly checking the lecture process.

Professor Hong Dae-geun said, “The automatic lecture attendance system using AI can improve work efficiency and quality stabilization, as well as significantly improve worker safety. said.

This research is an outstanding research achievement achieved through cooperation between POSTECH Graduate School of Steel and Energy Materials, POSCO Research Institute, Gwangyang Steelmaking Department, POSCO ICT, and PIBEX, and is attracting attention in that it achieved automation of lectures without relying on external technology.

Meanwhile, POSCO decided to expand the application of the converter tapping automation technology developed this time. For this reason, the joint research team of the POSTECH Graduate School of Steel and Energy Materials is promoting the technology transfer of the developed image-based slag darts automatic determination technology to Pyvex.
