POSTECH eliminates nitric acid, the main culprit of ‘green algae’ with sunlight

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) announced on the 14th that Professor Won-yong Choi's team in the School of Environmental Engineering has developed a denitrification photocatalyst material that converts nitrate ions into nitrogen using sunlight.

Whenever the temperature rises in summer, the uninvited visitor ‘green algae’, which dyes rivers and lakes dark green, is caused by the influx of fertilizers, domestic sewage, and factory wastewater into the river, resulting in an increase in nutrients in the water.

Especially in summer, when the sun is shining strongly and the water temperature rises, it is a good environment for algae to occur.

Fertilizers and factory wastewater that cause green algae contain a large amount of nitrogen compounds, and to prevent this, a technology called “denitrification” that converts nitrate ions into nitrogen is considered one of the core technologies. This is because when nitrate ions are converted to nitrogen gas, they escape from the water, preventing the increase of nutrients.

Professor Won-Yong Choi and Integrated Course Lee Sin-BC team developed the world's first photocatalyst material that converts nitrogen (N2) to nitrogen (N2) by selecting only nitrate ions (NO3-), a pollutant that causes algae, using sunlight without a chemical reducing agent. It was published as a paper on the back cover of 'Energy & Environmental Science', the most prestigious journal in the field of energy and environment issued by the Society of Chemistry (RSC).

‘Chemistry World’, published by the same society, was also introduced through an article, and this achievement, which drew extraordinary attention from the society, is evaluated as an innovative achievement that perfectly solved the problem of the existing denitrification process.

Existing denitrification processes require high energy as well as reducing agents such as hydrogen gas, methanol, and formic acid. Of course, there have been continuous attempts to use sunlight, which is harmless to the environment, as an energy source, but most of them require a lot of reducing agent, which has many problems in terms of economic feasibility and practicality. Of course, the method of using water as a reducing agent also remained a long-standing task.

This study started with the idea of using a semiconductor material and a photocatalyst that induces oxidation and reduction reactions through the interfacial reaction between holes and electrons generated when exposed to light.

First, the research team newly synthesized a photocatalyst based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) supported with double metal (Cu-Pd) nanoparticles and graphene oxide (rGO). This photocatalyst resulted in 100% reduction of 600 ppm of nitrate ions (NO3-) without any chemical reducing agent, while 98% was converted to nitrogen (N2)).

This photocatalyst improves the problem of the existing denitrification water treatment catalyst without requiring a chemical reducing agent because it generates hydrogen through a water decomposition reaction and uses this hydrogen directly as a reducing agent.

In particular, this catalyst is attracting attention as a more meaningful achievement in that it hardly generates nitrite ions (NO2-) generated as a by-product during the denitrification reaction and has environmentally friendly properties.

Meanwhile, this achievement was carried out with the support of the National Research Foundation's Leader Research Project.
