Daegu Textile Museum announced that it will hold a special exhibition ‘Daegu Textile, Changing Our Lives’ from the 16th to the 21st of November together with the National Folk Museum of Korea (Director Kim Jong-dae).

This exhibition is divided into Part 1 and Part 2 as an exhibition that illuminates Daegu, the textile city, and our lives changed through representative products.

In Part 1 - Daegu, Textile Blooms, the story of Daegu's textile industry, factory workers, and market merchants buying and selling textiles unfolds.

Daegu Commerce City Road (1954), Daegu City Urban Planning Map (1956) showing the formation of the textile city Daegu after the Korean War, and Daegu’s representative textile factories and various brands are exhibited. Live interviews with them are also available.

Also, in Part 2 - Daegu Textile, Changing Lives, calico, suits, and nylon, which were popular nationwide among major textile products, are introduced, and our daily life that has changed as a result is introduced.

Daegu was the center of the textile industry that led to industrialization and urbanization in Korea after liberation, and since the Japanese colonial period, there were many silk mills producing yarn, and relatively little damage from the Korean War.

In the 1950s, as Daegu's textile industry flourished, the production of cotton fabrics such as cotton, poplin, and calico increased significantly.

Among them, calico (玉洋木, calico) is a white western cotton with a fine jade-like surface. It was considered a precious cotton fabric and was widely used as a coma.

The bride-to-be presents her daughter with calico tabi and an apron that her mother made herself, a chima jeogori prepared as a wedding favor, and a calico furoshiki.

Also, as Western-style clothes became popular after liberation, Macao gentlemen who wore suits smuggled from Macau and Hong Kong appeared.

In 1954, Cheil Industries was established in Daegu, and since 1956, it has been producing woolen yarn in earnest and shipping Goldentex suits.

High-quality domestic suits spread across the country through the Seomun Market, and were used in various products such as coats, hats, gloves, and school uniforms, replacing expensive imported suits by defeating the Macau gentleman.

In this exhibition, you can meet Cheil Industries' rosette yarn, trademark, Goldentex suit, and customized suits, which sounded a signal for domestic wool products.

Nylon is now commonplace, but when it was first introduced to Korea in the 1950s, it was a high-quality fiber that captured the hearts of fashionable women.

A newspaper article about a woman who pessimistically committed suicide after a couple fight for not having a single nylon red ginseng (Chosun Ilbo on July 16, 1955), and a daughter who tried to commit suicide after accusing her parents of not buying a nylon skirt (August 12, 1955, Kyunghyang Shinmun) ), the popularity of nylon at that time was really great.

Nylon, a high-quality material that had been dependent on imports, began to spread cheaply in 1963, when Korea Nylon Co., Ltd. in Daegu started producing nylon in earnest.

This exhibition re-examines various nylon products that exist in our lives, from nylon stockings, hanbok, and parachute blouses, which were popular at the time, to household items such as mosquito nets, umbrellas and toothbrushes.

In the living space of the 1950s and 1980s reproduced in the exhibition hall, you can meet textile products of the time. Textile has always been with us and has changed our lives.

An official from the Daegu Textile Museum said, "I hope this exhibition will be a good time to visit the Daegu Textile Museum with family and lovers to sympathize with the stories we have shared with Daegu Textile and to look back on the trends and meanings of textiles in our daily lives." told
