Professor Noh Jun-seok of POSTECH Announces AI Utilization Research one after another

When designing antennas and heat radiators that effectively transmit radio waves and heat, AI (artificial intelligence) can help.

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) announced on the 25th that Professor Jun-seok Noh of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Chemical Engineering announced the results of design research using AI with the research team of Jae-beom Roh and Soon-ae Soh in the combined master's and doctoral course of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

According to POSTECH, Professor Noh Jun-seok and Roh Jae-beom's research team have expanded the scope of AI application further and designed 'metamaterial', an artificial material that ignores all properties of light. Meta-antennas made of meta-materials have unique reflection and transmission performance compared to general antennas. However, in order to design a meta-antenna, a considerable amount of time and effort was required as it had to rely on the intuition of the designer.

In the study, AI simply found the unit cell structure of the meta-antenna, and through this, Professor Jun-seok Roh and Jae-beom Roh and his research team successfully implemented the design method of the structure operating in the radio frequency domain.

In addition, Professor Jun-seok Noh and Sun-ae Soh's research team used AI to design a thermal emitter that can be applied to applications such as thermophotovoltaic cells, infrared sensing, imaging, and heating.

The mean squared error of the heat radiator designed by AI was less than 0.006, and the Q factor, which means the quality of the radiator, was also high, up to 109.2. This thermal radiator works regardless of the incident polarization and maintains good properties up to relatively wide angles of incidence.

Professor Noh Jun-seok said, “It used to take days to weeks to design, but with AI, accurate results can be obtained within seconds. We can provide creative and unexpected designs that people don't even think of, such as looking for designs," he said.

The two papers were each published in the world-class optics journal ‘Optical Materials Express’. The research by Jae-beom Roh's research team was carried out as part of the Future Challenge Defense Technology R&D project of the Defense Science Research Institute (ADD), and the research by Soon-ae Soh's research team was carried out as part of the Future Materials Discovery Project of the Ministry of Science and ICT.
