Numbness in the hands and feet is a common symptom. Therefore, it is often overlooked, but if it is chronic, it can be a disease that causes serious sequelae, so it is important to deal with it early. There are many different causes of numbness in the hands and feet, so an accurate diagnosis is essential.

When an arm or leg is pressed and the blood is not flowing well, and it is released, a numb feeling may occur under the pressed area. Because of these symptoms, it seems that when people usually experience numbness in their hands and feet, the first thing they think of is the clogging of blood vessels.

However, the direct anatomical cause of numbness is more likely to be a problem in the nervous system than in the blood vessels. When the wrist or foot is pressed, the blood vessel is temporarily blocked and the skin color change is noticeable.

Temporary numbness in the hands and feet in everyday life can occur frequently even in normal people, but it is easy to understand if you know the path of the peripheral nerves that move along the limbs. This is because, when a peripheral nerve exits the muscle from the joint and passes under the skin or close to the bone, it can be easily stimulated when an impact is given.

Typical locations are the ulnar nerve that passes right next to the elbow and the common peroneal nerve that passes next to the knee. When there is an impact on the elbow, a numbness that goes down to the 4th or 5th finger, and to the back of the foot when there is an impact on the knee is often induced. If nerve damage progresses chronically due to repetitive and prolonged joint movements or structural joint problems, it is necessary to correct the cause posture or solve the joint problem to prevent the loss of sensation and motor paralysis of the limbs due to nerve damage.

Common diseases that cause numbness in the hands and feet

The most common cause of hand numbness is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a case where the median nerve located in the carpal tunnel (carpal tunnel), where the tendons that move the fingers are gathered, are compressed and damaged. The exact cause is unknown, but it is highly related to diabetes and pregnancy, and it mainly occurs in people who use their hands a lot.

A typical symptom is numbness in part of the 1st to 4th fingers, which usually gets worse at night and causes pain. When it gets worse, he often misses objects, and as the muscles of the palm of the thumb dry out, the strength of the hand weakens.

The most common cause of foot numbness in everyday life is damage to the plantar nerve. Due to the anatomical location, fasciitis mainly occurs on the inside of the heel, or numbness in the sole of the foot can occur due to a direct injury. Another common complaint of leg numbness is restless legs syndrome.

Characteristically, symptoms begin or worsen at night when you are still, and you feel a tingling or discomfort feeling that makes you want to move your legs. Movement or kneading shows temporary improvement. This can also interfere with sleep.

Raynaud's disease is a disease in which blood vessels at the tip of the fingers, toes, nose, and ears constrict and turn pale when exposed to excessive stress, when going out to a cold place, immersing hands and feet in cold water, or excessive stress.

It is mainly noticeable in the fingers, and it is accompanied by numbness in the hands and feet, and the pain is not severe. There are more cases with no causative disease as a primary cause, but when accompanied by systemic sclerosis, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis, the symptoms are more severe and may cause necrosis, and may be accompanied by several other symptoms (arthralgia, skin disease, etc.). .

If it is chronic, active examination is required

Relatively mild symptoms or temporary numbness in the hands and feet can be monitored depending on the symptoms, but it is differentiated when the numbness continues for more than several weeks and worsens chronically, severe pain, changes in the skin of the limbs, swelling, decreased sensation, or motor paralysis. Aggressive testing may be required for diagnosis and treatment.

If numbness starts at the tips of both hands and feet and progresses to the upper limbs, accompanied by sensory loss and motor paralysis, there is a possibility of polyperipheral neuropathy. Polyperipheral neuropathy typically appears chronically in diabetes, and can occur in various systemic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, lupus, cancer diseases, nutritional deficiencies, drug toxicity, heredity, etc.).

If numbness and numbness occur on only one side of the body, including the face, there is a possibility of a brain disease including the central sensory nervous system.

If chronic pain (especially the back neck-shoulder area, back-sacrum area) along with numbness in one arm or leg is the problem, it is possible that it is a spinal disease of the neck or lower back accompanied by a nerve root disease. If numbness and pain are caused by movement, and skin color changes, swelling, or skin ulcers occur on the limbs, it may be due to an abnormality in a major blood vessel in the relevant limb.

As we have seen so far, numbness in the hands and feet has a variety of causes, ranging from temporary peripheral nerve stimulation to diseases with a risk of serious sequelae.

It is difficult to distinguish them without medical knowledge, but in most cases of temporary and partial numbness in the hands and feet, look for the triggers (excessive exercise, improper shoes, repeated joint movements, uncomfortable postures, etc.) During the correction, it can be observed whether the symptoms worsen or there are no accompanying symptoms that may cause other problems. However, if it progresses to a chronic problem or if there are accompanying symptoms, it is recommended that you seek help with an appropriate diagnosis and treatment through a neurologist.
