POSTECH(포항공과대학교, 총장 김무환)은 ‘제2회 POSTECH SF 어워드’를 개최한다고 17일 밝혔다.

2020년 시작된 이 어워드는 이공계 대학(원)생을 대상으로 한 국내 최초의 SF 공모전이다. 창작에 익숙하지 않은 이공계 전공의 대학(원)생 대상의 문학 공모전임에도 불구하고 1회 대회에는 단편과 미니픽션을 포함해 총 200여 편이 응모됐다.

과학기술의 사회적 책임이 날로 커지는 요즘, SF는 이공학적 지식과 인문사회학적 상상력의 창조적 융합을 실현할 수 있는 중요한 미디어로 각광받고 있다.

그간 한국 SF는 소수 애호가만이 즐기는 장르문학으로 여겨졌고, 그마저도 과학기술적 고증이 제대로 되지 않아 독자의 요구에 부응하지 못한다는 지적을 받았다. ‘POSTECH SF 어워드‘는 더 많은 과학기술 전공자가 한국 SF의 미래를 함께 일구어갈 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.

이번 어워드는 200자 원고지 90매 내외 단편소설과 25매 내외 미니픽션으로 각각 구분해 공모·시상한다. 전통적인 단편소설 형식 외에도 최근 다양한 매체에서 다뤄지는 미니픽션을 SF와 결합함으로써 이공계 전공자의 접근성을 높이고 새로운 서사적 스타일을 모색하기 위함이다. 당선자에게는 단편소설과 미니픽션 부문에서 각각 500만 원과 300만 원의 상금, POSTECH 총장상을 수여한다.

올해부터는 SF 전문 출판사인 ’아작’의 후원으로 수상작을 모은 작품집을 출간할 예정이다. 접수는 오는 12월 31일까지며, 이메일(postech-icp@postech.ac.kr)로 원고와 필요한 서류를 제출하면 된다. 수상작 발표는 내년 1월 중으로 예정돼 있으며, 심사위원은 수상작 발표와 함께 공개된다.

이번 대회를 주관하는 POSTECH 소통과 공론 연구소 소장 김민정 교수는 “이공계 대학(원)생들이 글쓰기를 통해 인문학적 감수성을 키우고 사회와 소통함으로써 본 공모전과 함께 성장해나갈 수 있기를 기대한다”고 말했다.

 Held the 2nd POSTECH SF Awards

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) announced on the 17th that it would hold the ‘2nd POSTECH SF Award’.

This award, which started in 2020, is the first SF contest in Korea for science and engineering college (graduate) students. Despite the fact that it was a literary contest for university (graduate) students majoring in science and engineering who are not familiar with creative writing, a total of 200 entries, including short stories and minifictions, were submitted for the first contest.

  In these days when the social responsibility of science and technology is increasing day by day, science fiction is spotlighted as an important medium that can realize the creative fusion of science and engineering knowledge and humanities and social sciences imagination.

Until now, Korean science fiction has been regarded as a genre of literature enjoyed only by a small number of enthusiasts, and even that has been criticized for not being able to meet the needs of readers due to lack of scientific and technological verification. The ‘POSTECH SF Award’ is meaningful in that it provides an opportunity for more science and technology majors to build the future of Korean science fiction together.

  This award is divided into a short story of about 90 pages of 200-character manuscript paper and a mini-fiction of about 25 pages, respectively. In addition to the traditional short story format, it is to increase the accessibility of science and engineering majors by combining minifiction, which has been recently dealt with in various media, with SF, and to explore a new narrative style. The winner will be awarded a prize of 5 million won and 3 million won, respectively, in the short story and minifiction categories, and the POSTECH President's Award.

  Starting this year, with the support of 'Ajak', a sci-fi publishing house, a collection of award-winning works will be published. Applications are due by December 31st, and you can submit your manuscript and necessary documents by e-mail (postech-icp@postech.ac.kr). The announcement of the winners is scheduled for January next year, and the judges will be announced along with the announcement of the winners.

Professor Min-Jeong Kim, director of the POSTECH Communication and Public Discourse Research Institute, which hosts this competition, said, “I hope that science and engineering college (graduate) students will be able to grow together with this contest by nurturing their humanistic sensibility through writing and communicating with society.”
