Development of a mixture of 5 types of freshwater microorganisms that decompose difficult-to-decompose organic carbon

The National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center (Director Yoo Ho) announced on the 6th that it has recently developed a mixture of five types of freshwater microorganisms that decomposes 'non-degradable organic carbon'.

According to the National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center, ‘recomposable organic carbon’ refers to compounds that have carbon atom compounds as their basic skeleton in chemical structure, such as phenol and toluene, and it is difficult to decompose in a natural state, so it costs a lot to purify wastewater.

Since 2017, the National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center has discovered 42 aerobic microorganisms that reduce recalcitrant organic carbon such as phenols in the domestic freshwater environment such as the Nakdong River, and among them, 5 freshwater microorganisms with excellent degradability (Rhodococcus josti CP3-1, Novos) Phingobium fluvie HK2, Sphingobium yanoiguae A3, Debosia Insule N2-112, Mycolic bacterium friederis bergens N2-52) were selected to develop a microbial mixture.

The research team injected 4.8 kg of a mixture of five types of microorganisms into a water pollution prevention treatment facility that purifies 40 tons of industrial wastewater per day, and confirmed the effect of reducing total organic carbon (TOC) after 14 days.

As a result of confirming the reduction effect, the amount of total organic carbon, which was at a maximum of 80 mg/L, was lowered to an average of 20 mg/L or less for 10 days.

This satisfies 25-75 mg/L or less, which is the allowable standard for total organic carbon (TOC) emission of wastewater discharge facilities under the Water Environment Conservation Act.

In addition, it was confirmed that this 5-type mixture of microorganisms can decompose various difficult-to-decompose organic substances such as unsaturated hydrocarbons of terpene alcohols as well as phenols.

Based on the results of this study, the research team applied for a patent* on the method of manufacturing a microbial mixture and applying industrial wastewater in December last year, and plans to pursue follow-up research that can be applied to actual purification industry sites such as water treatment.

Jeong Sang-cheol, head of the microbiological research department at the National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center, said, “We plan to continue securing microorganisms that reduce pollutants in the future. do,” he said.
