Gyeongju City, a small step towards revitalization of subtropical crop cultivation

Gyeongju City is actively promoting the cultivation of subtropical crops to increase the competitiveness of local agriculture and support farm household income by discovering and distributing alternative crops to respond to global warming and diversification of fruit consumption patterns.

According to Gyeongju City on the 4th, citrus fruits such as Gyeongjubong and Red Hyangbong and melons in the area are gradually expanding, and apple mangoes are also being cultivated on a trial basis.

Since the early 2010s, Gyeongju City has supplied citrus fruits grown in the southern region to local farmers.

Since then, with continuous support and efforts such as dissemination of cultivation technology for quality improvement and establishment of various sales strategies, 24 farms are currently cultivating in an area of 9.5 ha.

Unlike citrus fruits grown in other regions where the soil is poor and the climate is unsuitable, Gyeongjubong is close to the warm east coast in winter. It is grown in sunny weather and excellent soil.

In particular, it enjoys high popularity throughout the country for its excellent quality that has undergone a rigorous selection process by the Gyeongju Agricultural Products Regional Distribution Center.

Meanwhile, melon, which was introduced as a crop after tomato cultivation and started to be cultivated by 4 farms in 2003, was successfully harvested for the first time in 2008, and 77 farms are currently cultivating it in an area of 35 hectares.

In particular, tomatoes are grown during the fallow season, playing a role in increasing farm household income.

To revitalize melon cultivation, the city is providing support such as the installation of cultivation facilities, cultivation technology training, and public relations.

Like Gyeongjubong, the Agricultural Products Distribution Center is gaining great popularity as it selects and sells only products with a sugar content of 13 Brix or higher in order to supply melons with the highest quality taste and fragrance.

Gyeongju is conducting a pilot cultivation of a new subtropical crop, ‘apple mango’, with the goal of harvesting in 2024.

A farmhouse in Oyari, Cheonbuk-myeon, was designated as a demonstration farm for cultivation, and 230 million won was invested in the project, including 50% of the farmer's burden and 15% of the provincial fee.

In accordance with the pilot cultivation promotion, △3-dong facility house 0.15 hectare △ related facilities and equipment △ 600 second-year-old seedlings were installed and supported.

Normal harvesting is possible from a 5-year-old tree, so a commercially viable apple mango harvest is expected from 2024.

Along with pilot cultivation, the city is supporting farmers by promoting education for the dissemination of subtropical crop cultivation techniques.

Another tropical crop, papaya, is being grown on a farm in Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju.

Papaya, which has been grown in one house since 2013 with the support of the Agricultural Technology Center, is mainly supplied to foreigners from Southeast Asia.

Gyeongju Mayor Nak-young Joo said, “The number of farms who are cultivating subtropical crops is increasing due to climate change.

He added, "We will make efforts to specialize the region's excellent subtropical fruits loved by all people and turn them into tourism resources."
