이에 지역 정가에서는 갑론을박이 이어지고 있는데 특히 제20대 대통령선거에서 국민의힘 대구공동선대위원장을 지낸 김형기 전 선대위원장은 홍 의원의 대구시장 출마를 두고 “배신행위”라고 강하게 비판하며 “애국과 호국의 성지 대구를 자신의 정치적 야욕을 채우려는 수단으로 삼지 말아야 한다.”며 비판했다.
