이준석 국민의힘 대표는 23일 국회서 기자들과 만난 자리에서 “최고위원회의에서의 현역의원 10%·무소속 출마경력자 15% 페널티 등으로 결정된 지방선거 공천심사 방식에 대하여 저는 누차 감산점 등 어떤 형태든 반대한다는 취지로 말했다” 며 “현역 국회의원의 출마에 대한 페널티, 무소속 출마 경력 페널티 등에 다 반대해왔다"고 강조했다.

그러면서 "김재원 최고위원이 오늘 모 방송에서 제가 35% 패널티를 적용하자고 했고, 본인이 25%로 줄였다는 취지로 말하던데..... 이에 대한 회의록도 남아 있다. 회의 배석자들도 전혀 그런 상황이 아니라고 얘기하고 있다“고 반박했다.  

이 대표는 특히 “본인(김재원 위원)이 대구시장에 출마하는 상황에서 여러 가지 좋지 않은 오해를 사다보니 당 대표인 내게 뒤집어씌우려는 것 같은데....., (나는) 이 상황이 무슨 상황인지 깊이 고민하고 생각중”이라고 덧붙였다.
