POSTECH Professor Daesung Jeong's team improves OPD performance by synthesizing molecular switches

A research team at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) has developed a technology that allows an organic photodiode (OPD) to detect objects even in strong light by adding small molecules.

OPD is an optical sensor that detects color and brightness by converting light energy into electrical energy. However, there is a limitation that it cannot easily detect an object when it receives strong light such as the sun.

POSTECH announced on the 5th that a research team led by Professor Daesung Jeong and Dr. Minkyun Kang of the Department of Chemical Engineering succeeded in synthesizing a molecular switch to improve the performance of OPD.

This research result was recently published in the international academic journal 'Advanced Materials'.

Unlike inorganic semiconductors, which generate more electrical energy as the intensity of light increases, organic semiconductors with low charge mobility have a limited amount of electrical energy produced even when the intensity of light increases.

For this reason, studies have been conducted to increase the charge mobility of organic semiconductors to generate a lot of electrical energy with stronger light. However, in the process, the properties of the semiconductor change and the OPD has a problem that the accuracy of expressing colors is lowered.

The research team paid attention to the 'molecular switch', which exhibits different properties when a molecule is exposed to light or stimulated. As a result of synthesizing a molecular switch and adding it to the organic semiconductor layer of the photodiode, OPD was able to accurately express colors while showing excellent photodetectivity. In particular, the advantage of this technology is that it can be applied regardless of the type of organic semiconductor in the photoactive layer.

A general molecular switch returns to its initial state when it receives ultraviolet light from its initial state, and returns to its initial state when it receives visible light. However, the research team realized a molecular switch that autonomously changes state according to the intensity of incident light, paying attention to the fact that the molecular switch changes the distribution of the initial state and semiconductor state depending on the intensity of white light, which is a mixture of both ultraviolet and visible light.

OPD, which is a component of an image sensor, can be used not only for cameras, but also for biometric sensors such as iris and fingerprints, and optical communication. The result of this research is that it is possible to improve the performance of autonomous vehicle and drone sensors that are frequently exposed to sunlight by allowing objects to be detected even in strong light.

Professor Dae-Sung Jeong said, “We proposed a structure of a photodiode that changes its driving mechanism by itself according to the intensity of light.

Meanwhile, this study was conducted with the support of Samsung Electronics' Samsung Future Technology Development Center.
