(Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society)에 최근 게재된 이 연구성과는 2020년 전 지구에서 발생했던 이상 기후의 원인 규명을 보고하는 ‘2020년의 극한 현상 설명(Explaining Extreme Events of 2020)’ 특별호에 실렸다.

Hot and humid ‘winter’, caused by global warming caused by human activities

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) Professor Jong-hoon Gam's team in the School of Environmental Engineering pointed to 'humanity' as the cause of the hot and humid winters in the northwestern region of Russia in 2019 and 2020.

According to POSTECH on the 9th, this was analyzed using the Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), and the fact that human influence is greater than the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), one of the natural variability as a result of revealing

The North Atlantic Oscillation is a seesaw-like phenomenon in which the difference in sea level pressure between the Icelandic low pressure and the Azores high pressure fluctuates like a seesaw, and is one of the representative meteorological phenomena in the North Atlantic. It is known that hot winters may occur in certain regions due to changes in this oscillation, but it is not known why hot and humid weather appears simultaneously in winter.

As a result of the analysis, the North Atlantic Oscillation was strong during that time, but it was found that the possibility of hot and humid weather was extremely slim if greenhouse gases did not increase due to human activities. In the northwestern region of Russia, the probability of a hot winter has increased by about five times due to human activity, and the probability of a wet winter has increased by about 20 times. The probability of hot and humid winters from greenhouse gases increased by about 20 times and about 30 times, respectively.

The research team warned that hot and humid winters may occur frequently in northwestern Russia, which is sensitive to temperature changes in the future due to global warming. In particular, since winter weather in the region plays an important role in the formation of spring and summer weather in Eurasia, it cannot be overlooked even in Korea.

Professor Gam Jong-hoon said, “We need to pay more attention to climate change in winter because it increases the possibility of natural disasters in the spring and summer of the following year. We have to respond,” he said.

Meanwhile, this research result, recently published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, is the 'Explaining Extreme Events of 2020', which reports on the investigation of the causes of abnormal climates that occurred around the globe in 2020. ' was published in a special issue.

This research is based on the National Research Foundation of Korea’s ocean, land, and atmospheric carbon cycle system research project (NRF-2021M).
