POSCO laid the foundation for expanding sales of cryogenic high manganese steel mass-produced for the first time in the world
POSCO announced on the 25th that high manganese steel for cryogenic use, which was successfully mass-produced for the first time in the world, has completed material stability and suitability evaluation of global energy company ExxonMobil and has been approved as steel for LNG storage and transportation.
High manganese steel is a new material developed by POSCO for the first time in the world in 2013. It is an innovative innovative material that has various performances such as high strength, abrasion resistance, cryogenic toughness, and non-magnetic properties by adding a large amount of manganese (Mn, 10-30%) to iron. refers to the steel material.
ExxonMobil's technology approval is required to participate in the project invested by ExxonMobil. Through this approval, POSCO laid the technological foundation for supplying high manganese steel for cryogenic use.
POSCO and ExxonMobil met at the WGC2022 event held in Daegu on the 25th and held a technology approval ceremony for cryogenic high manganese lecture 1 technology. The event was attended by Se-don Joo, head of the POSCO R&D Center, and Peter Clarke, senior vice president of ExxonMobil.
High manganese steel for cryogenic use is a special steel with excellent impact toughness and strength in extreme environments below -162℃, which is the temperature for maintaining LNG in a liquid state. High manganese steel is evaluated as having excellent price competitiveness compared to existing materials that had to increase the content of expensive components such as nickel, chromium, and aluminum by using manganese, which is abundant in production worldwide and inexpensive, as its main component. In particular, high-manganese steel is emerging as a new alternative for domestic and foreign plant companies that are having difficulties in supply and demand in a situation where raw material prices rise and global supply chain instability continues.
“The two companies have experience leading to mass production of high manganese steel for the first time in the world by transparently sharing research results based on mutual trust and strengthening technical cooperation,” said Joo Se-don, head of POSCO Research Institute. We hope that high manganese steel will lead to global project supply, creating another success story for both companies.”
Peter Clarke, senior vice president, said, “The achievement of this successful collaboration is the result of the convergence of ExxonMobil’s expertise and POSCO’s world-class technology. Let's go out together," he said.
In July 2020, POSCO started the technology approval process to promote the application of its high manganese steel to eco-friendly LNG terminals to be built by ExxonMobil around the world. When POSCO submits material test results and samples, ExxonMobil conducts only essential verifications such as processability and stability evaluation, simplifying the procedure, and shortening the approval period more than twice. This was possible because high manganese steel was applied to the Gwangyang LNG storage tank No. 5 and fuel tanks of about 20 LNG-powered ships and crude oil carriers, and ExxonMobil had trusted POSCO's technology from the past.
The two companies decided to complete the two-year approval process with the delivery of the approval letter on the same day and continue discussions to apply POSCO's high manganese steel to ExxonMobil's overseas LNG projects. In addition, they promised not only to develop new uses for high manganese steel, but also to cooperate in technological cooperation to lead eco-friendly fields such as hydrogen business and CCUS in the future.
Meanwhile, POSCO successfully supplied high manganese steel for slurry pipe, developed for the first time in the world in 2013, to ExxonMobil's Curl Oil Sands project, and received the 'Excellent Contract of the Year Award for Excellence in Chemicals, Energy, Environment, and Materials' at the 2017 North American Intellectual Property Association Annual General Meeting in 2017. ' has been awarded. At that time, POSCO and ExxonMobil conducted joint research from 2012, the initial stage of development, to pipe welding, manufacturing, and field testing of slurry pipes.
Slurry pipe is a steel pipe specialized in transporting oil sand, which is sand containing crude oil. When high manganese steel is applied, the wear resistance is improved by more than 5 times compared to existing materials, and the lifespan of equipment and the replacement cycle of the pipe can be dramatically increased, thereby improving plant operation efficiency. rises <저작권자 ⓒ 브레이크뉴스 대구경북 무단전재 및 재배포 금지>
