Pohang City, Bio sector selected for two public offerings

Pohang City announced on the 30th that it was selected for the 'Commercialization of Structure-Based Vaccine Design Technology' and 'Bioprinting Utilization of Animal Alternative Testing and Evaluation Platform Construction Project' organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 30th and secured a total of 17.5 billion won in government funds over the next three years.

'Structure-based vaccine design technology commercialization project' is a support project to commercialize molecular design technology for new drug vaccines through the convergence of protein structure analysis technology and artificial intelligence technology. to be.

As Pohang was selected for this project, it expanded the new drug-based ecosystem by securing a rapid response system for infectious diseases through excellent infrastructure such as cryogenic electron microscopes, 3rd and 4th generation accelerators, supply of the latest technologies, and human resource training, and complementing the Cell Membrane Protein Research Center and the radiation accelerator. This is expected to invigorate the domestic new drug development industry.

The research institute in charge of this project is POSTECH (Cell Membrane Protein Research Institute), and research teams from Pohang Accelerator Research Center, Daegu Gyeongbuk Advanced Medical Industry Promotion Foundation, Gyeongbuk Bio Industry Research Institute, Eulji University, and Chungnam National University participate. In addition, a corporate consultative body centered on vaccine and new drug development companies will be formed to support companies by utilizing the research infrastructure of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk area.

In addition, the 'bioprinting-using animal alternative testing and evaluation platform construction project' is a 3 year period from 2022 to 2024, with a total of 16.5 billion won (7.5 billion won from the government, 90 from the local government), the first in Korea to build the first bioprinting artificial organ manufacturing facility in Pohang. It will be built within the Pohang Knowledge Industry Center located in the technology industrial district.

The animal alternative testing and evaluation industry using bioprinting uses artificial organs manufactured with bioprinting technology using biomaterials harmless to the human body for preclinical testing and evaluation of functional cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. industry to be evaluated.

POSTECH provides technical support for the production and use of artificial organs Pohang Techno Park provides cGMP production facilities and wet-lab for alternative tests and provides corporate support. is responsible for

Pohang City and Gyeongsangbuk-do have formed a consortium in which POSTECH, Pohang Technopark, and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology are participating in response to the growing global demand for the development of alternative animal testing and evaluation methods in the development of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics due to ethical issues related to animal testing. Gyeongsangbuk-do applied for a bioprinting platform construction project for two projects by city and province, and was selected as a suitable project for new promotion by the Ministry of Industry in 2022, and was selected in the final competition this year.

Pohang city secured technology development capabilities in connection with cutting-edge research infrastructure by attracting new cell membrane protein research centers, green vaccine demonstration support centers and green bio venture campuses built in the Pohang Convergence Technology District, providing corporate technical support and fostering the local bio industry. Through this, we plan to develop into a global bio-industrial city.

Acting Pohang Mayor Lee Jang-sik said, “Pohang has the best technology in Korea in the field of commercialization of vaccine design technology and development of bio-printing artificial organs for animal substitution test and evaluation, so there is a high possibility of industrialization through this project.” We will do our best to become a leading city in the new bio-health industry by doing our best in multilateral support and cooperation to foster it.”
