POSTECH·IBS

POSTECH·IBS research team develops technology to control chemical reaction by light and sound

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-Hwan) is a research team led by Professor Ki-Moon Kim (Director of the Institute of Basic Science (IBS) Complex Systems Self-Assembly Research Center) and Seo-Yeon Choi’s research team from the Department of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering together with Research Fellow Rahul Dev Mukhopadhyay of IBS. They announced on the 31st that they have developed a technology to control chemical reactions with light and sound.

In addition, it visualized it with color and showed that it can precisely move an object on a solution.

This research result, recently published in the international academic journal Chem, is expected to serve as a starting point for understanding the signal processing process of living things. This is because our complex body also recognizes external stimuli such as light and sound and responds accordingly.

The research team showed that when the oxidation reaction of a viologen solution is caused by light, the chemical reaction can be selectively controlled by using sound together. This solution is yellow in color and turns green when it reacts with light. By combining the area illuminated with light and sound, the formation and disappearance of a concentric circle pattern made of yellow and green can be freely controlled.

The research team also succeeded in moving an object on a solution. When a small object is placed on the solution in the Petri dish and light is irradiated with a laser pointer, the surface tension is reduced due to a chemical reaction and the solution flows instantaneously. According to this flow, the object will also move naturally. By using sound, the movement of objects can be controlled more precisely, and even complex functions such as finding a maze can be performed.

This research result is the result of revealing that chemical reactions can be controlled using light and sound in a non-equilibrium state like nature. In particular, it is drawing attention as a research that will be the first step in simplifying the complex signal processing process of living things by interpreting the chemical reaction identified in the study as binary Boolean logic.
