Skin revitalization without scars with ‘mussel’

Recently, a domestic research team drew attention by developing a medical adhesive that uses mussel adhesive protein to quickly heal wounds and produce little or no scars. When the skin is transplanted with this adhesive, the skin can be effectively revived without sutures.

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) announced on the 16th that Professor Hyung-Jun Cha of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Woo-Hyeong Park of the MS, and Jae-Yoon Lee of the integrated course, research team developed a medical adhesive for skin grafting containing two drugs through joint research with Dr. Hyo-Jeong Kim of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology. said.

This research result, which suggested the possibility of 'scar-free' skin grafting, was recently published in the 'Chemical Engineering Journal', the most prestigious international academic journal in the field of chemical engineering.

The research team made a medical adhesive by putting allantoin and epidermal growth factor in the mussel adhesive protein of the liquid formulation 1). When this medical adhesive is applied, two drugs are released and act in turn according to the wound regeneration stage, and the skin is regenerated.

As a result of the study, it was found that the wound area was recovered more effectively than the sutures used in the existing skin graft. In particular, the loss of hair follicles in the transplanted area was very small, and collagen and major skin factors were effectively revived.

Unlike sutures, this medical adhesive leaves almost no scars on the wound site and is harmless to the human body by using a biomaterial, mussel adhesive protein.

Professor Cha Hyeong-jun said, “The medical adhesive based on mussel adhesive protein, a Korean source material, was used in skin grafting to minimize scars and promote skin regeneration. could be,” he said.

Meanwhile, this research was supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Health and Medical Technology Development Project. The mussel adhesive protein material technology has been transferred to Nature Glutech, and among them, the Pixlite product, a medical adhesive for soft tissues other than the epidermis, has been approved for clinical trials and is undergoing clinical trials. Commercialization and development of medical adhesives in liquid form is in progress.
