경북도와 이 지사는 28일 “새 정부 방침과 국민적 요구에 부응하는 차원에서 도지사 관사를 폐지한다”면서“침체돼 있는 도청신도시 활성화를 위해 단독주택 용지에 개인주택을 짓고 건축이 완공되는 대로 현재 관사로 사용 중인 게스트하우스에서 퇴거하겠다”고 밝혔다. 

이 지사는 2018년 당선 후, 관사로 사용해 오던 아파트의 임대계약을 해지하고 임대보증금 약 4억원을 회수해 도 재정으로 편입시킨 뒤, 도청 신청사 대외통상교류관의 게스트하우스를 관사로 사용하면서  관사 사용에 따른 전기요금 등의 관리비는 자비로 부담해왔다.

이 지사의 이같은 입장에 따라 광역단체장 가운데 홍준표 대구시장과 당선인과 전북의 김관영 도지사 두 명만이 관사에 입주할 예정이다. 그 외 나머지 단체장들은 관사에 들어가는 비용 자체가 예산 낭비라며 집에 출퇴근하는 방법을 선택했다.
