Like a water-drinking hippo, the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide

Moisture, the natural enemy of Jachisaeng. Especially in humid weather such as the rainy season, a musty smell in the closet vibrates. At this time, you can manage your wardrobe more refreshingly if you put a 'water-drinking hippo'. What if the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and creates clean air, just like a water-drinking hippo absorbs moisture?

The reason why POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) Department of Environmental Engineering Professor Ki-taek Lee and Research Assistant Professor Ja-myung Kim conducted joint research with the National Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, and the National Academy of Fisheries Science to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the Northeast China Sea. said

This research result was recently published in the international academic journal ‘Frontiers in Marine Science’.

The Ieodo Marine Science Station in the Northeast China Sea was installed on an underwater reef about 150km southwest of Marado, the southernmost tip of the country. Located in the middle of Korea, Japan, and China, this place is the best place to analyze the atmospheric environment in Northeast Asia and to predict future changes in the marine environment.

As a result of an analysis of ocean carbon observed for 7 years at the Ieodo Ocean Science Base, phytoplankton living in the ocean surface increased rapidly in spring and summer. This is because a large amount of nutrients, which are food for phytoplankton, flow in from the Yangtze River in China between April and August. As phytoplankton's active photosynthetic activity reduces carbon concentration in the ocean's surface, more carbon dioxide is absorbed into the ocean.

In addition, during the winter from November to March of the following year, the water temperature dropped sharply and the wind blew strongly, resulting in active carbon dioxide dissolution reaction in the ocean surface and gas exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean. This has been shown to significantly increase the ocean's uptake of carbon dioxide.

That is, atmospheric carbon dioxide is removed from the Northeast China Sea area due to seasonal growth of marine life and thermodynamic properties of carbon dioxide gas. The area's net carbon dioxide absorption amounted to 61.7 g C m-2 yr-1 per year, and about 20 million tons (t CO2) of carbon dioxide is removed annually in Korea's exclusive economic zone where a similar mechanism occurs.

This research result is drawing attention from the academic community as a basis for supporting the theory that the ocean can more effectively remove carbon when a large amount of carbon dioxide absorbed from shallow coastal waters moves to the depths of the nearby ocean.

Meanwhile, this research was conducted with the support of the National Research Foundation of Korea Science and Technology Basic Research Project and Source Technology Development Project, the National Institute of Oceans and Fisheries, the National Institute of Fisheries Science, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
