According to the “Quality of Life of the People” report released in March 2021, the obesity rate in 2020 was 38.3%, an increase of 4.5% compared to 2019.

This is a sharp increase compared to the obesity rate, which has been steadily increasing in the past. In addition, the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia also increased.

The prevalence of obesity and dyslipidemia was on the rise even before Corona 19, but it increased significantly after the epidemic (6.2%p, 3.2%p). It increased by 3.1%p and 3.0%p.

When looking at changes by age, obesity increased in men in their 30s, decrease in aerobic physical activity practice rate, and high-risk drinking rate and prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in their 40s were evident. As a result, the prevalence of all chronic diseases and obesity increased.

Correlation between COVID-19 and an increase in the obese population

In the beginning, human beings were made to survive only by moving their bodies, such as picking and eating fruits before farming or hunting.

In other words, it was an environment where there was no accumulation of fat due to the fact that the body was used all day long, and there was always a shortage of food. When the body is not used to support the body, heavy muscles are immediately removed and fat is easily accumulated and evolved.

In this way, when the body of a person who is basically made to survive only by moving the body becomes a daily corona that does not move without exerting any effort all day, the muscle strength that you want to hold is lost, and the fat that you do not want to accumulate is accumulated in the body.

In fact, the main age group that gained weight rapidly during the corona virus is men in their 30s and 40s. Working from home made it harder to move, and it was difficult to exercise at the fitness center and so on, which led to a sharp drop in physical activity. In addition, the increase in the high-risk drinking rate along with various stresses, and the increase in calorie intake due to delivery food, etc., may have exacerbated obesity.

If the obese population increases, is it inevitable that chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia, which are the causes of obesity, will increase? If people do not succeed in losing weight as they are and get older, the change in the prevalence of chronic diseases among young people due to COVID-19 inevitably leads to an increase in complications such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and dyslipidemia 5 to 10 years later. There will be none.

Therefore, once the corona has calmed down, it is necessary to lose weight for those who have gained weight. Theoretically, obesity means too many calories left over after eating, so anyone can reduce body fat by using more than what they eat and not lying down.

Since young men are in a good period of basic physical fitness, it is possible to lose weight by reducing the amount that they eat regularly. When you have free time, you have to binge eat or eat late at night, and when you are busy, you need to correct the irregular eating habits that you cannot eat properly.

Even if you don't exercise, try increasing your activity level. Whenever I have time, I lift dumbbells and do gymnastics with bare hands, and make it a habit to walk 7,000 to 10,000 steps, even in small portions throughout the day.

Avoid overeating and eat three regular meals, but the prescription is to reduce the amount of food by 20-30% at each meal and increase the amount of activity. It is to replenish stamina by using muscle strength little by little, and to prevent stamina loss caused by reducing the amount of food eaten so that it can withstand weight loss well.

On the other hand, in the case of some women with low muscle mass, they work all at once even though they have weak physical strength, and the moment when they are tired and unable to move is prolonged or repeated. It can only accumulate and call obesity.

Conversely, such people can prevent fat accumulation by eating properly, including protein, so that they do not run out of breakfast, and not working all at once, that is, dividing the work without reducing the amount of food and preventing the moment when the stamina runs out.

It’s like paying 300,000 won a month and then giving 1 million won irregularly, even if you keep paying 1 million won, it’s like holding onto the money and not using it well. As your body tries to store it, it turns into a body that is more prone to gaining weight.

Obesity, how to deal with it?

So, how can we get out of the risk of obesity and chronic diseases by living a basic life? First of all, you should avoid an irregular life. Eat on time, move regularly, and sleep.

In the past, people got up when the sun rose, ate and farmed, and slept when the sun went down, even without a watch, so they were able to lead a regular life naturally.

The body remembers an individual's daily life, so if you eat irregularly after eating or not eating, resting after being overworked, and even sleeping irregularly, it will try to eat more or accumulate more fat at the next meal to survive. The body also tries to hold on to fat or water, which are fuel for organs to survive.

Therefore, eat three meals at a certain time and eat enough calories for breakfast and lunch so that you don't gain weight easily while maintaining muscle.

If you eat less breakfast and lunch to lose weight, obese people need a lot of calories, so it becomes difficult to control their appetite in the evening, and it becomes difficult to avoid binge eating or late night eating.

In fact, if you only think about losing weight, you can starve yourself. Until recently, various methods such as one meal a day diet and time-limited diet were popular.

Even if you skip one meal, your energy intake will be reduced by 600~700kcal, so of course your body will consume muscle, fat, and water, and your weight on the scale will decrease.

However, if you continue to lose weight in this way, your body will catch fat and consume muscle and water first. When the muscle decreases, the physical strength decreases and the body becomes heavy, making it difficult to perform activities, and emotional changes such as anxiety and depression are accompanied, making it increasingly difficult to lose weight.

In addition, if physical strength decreases, the risk of chronic diseases increases, so even if you lose weight, your blood pressure or blood sugar may rise further, which ultimately harms your health.

Therefore, you need to eat three meals well, maintain a good metabolic rate, increase energy consumption, and ensure that food is properly discharged through the intestines to prevent chronic disease and control weight.

Westernized diet plays a big role in obesity among young people, so try to eat Korean food at least two meals a day. The main reason that middle-aged Korean women gain weight is that they eat a lot of food and eat a lot of sweet or savory rice cakes, bread and fruits as snacks.

In an era when food was scarce, there was no need to worry. By strengthening the staple food you eat with rice and side dishes, you can maintain your stamina and maintain muscle mass and stamina by not reducing the amount of calories your body consumes (basal metabolic rate).

Are there any special exercises to lose weight?

It is more important to choose an exercise that you can consistently incorporate into your daily routine rather than the type of exercise. Using public transportation or taking the stairs to increase physical activity is the first step to a sports lifestyle. Wouldn’t it be great if you start with aerobic exercise such as walking, running, or swimming and then add dumbbell lifting or upper and lower body strength training for 5 to 10 minutes at a time 2-3 times a day?

In fact, the biggest obstacle to starting exercise for weight control is that it is not easy to do with work. During the first two weeks, you may lose concentration as you adjust to the exercise, but your body adapts quickly.

On the other hand, people who are not obese or the elderly should increase their food intake even through snacks by 200 kcal on days when they exercise more than usual to prevent exhaustion of stamina or the body from trying to accumulate more fat, and rather control blood pressure and blood sugar do. After all, eating and moving activities must be balanced to prevent muscle loss and fat gain.

In the age of artificial intelligence, there is no need to move even a single fingertip, and the obese population is bound to increase even more in the future. In an environment where people have no choice but to live in the opposite direction to the direction created in the beginning, if people live as comfortable as they can, there may come an era in which both individuals and the nation will spend most of their financial resources for the treatment of diseases. In the post-corona era, create an opportunity to correct your lifestyle to combat obesity and manage chronic diseases.
