POSTECH Prof. Junseok Noh and Anna Lee team developed a method to reduce low-frequency vibration using a chiral structure

A low-frequency vibration that resonates 'we-ing-we-ing'. It may not be easy to feel because it does not make a loud sound, but once you notice it, the pain is indescribable. In particular, recently, there are a number of people who complain of psychological damage while continuously listening to low-frequency vibrations such as noise between floors.

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) Professor Noh Jun-seok of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, Jung-hoon Park of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Anna Lee of the Department of Mechanical Engineering A research team developed a method to catch these low-frequency vibrations using a chiral structure. The chiral structure, also called mirror image symmetry, is symmetrical when viewed in a mirror like the left and right hands, but has a unique characteristic that it does not overlap.

This research result, which can be used not only in the development of vibration and noise reduction systems, but also in the fields of machinery and construction, was recently published in the international academic journal Communications Physics.

Since seismic waves1) of structures appear as various waves, studies on suppressing all vibrations that occur at this time have hardly been conducted. Existing research on reducing vibrations with “metamaterials” with properties that do not exist in nature also focused on only one type of vibration. There is also a risk that such a system may amplify the vibrations that were not initially intended when the vibrations spread.

The research team succeeded in blocking all kinds of vibrations that spread in a specific frequency band. This is to develop a mechanism that can effectively reduce any vibration by realizing a complete band gap2) at low frequencies using a chiral structure.

Professor Noh Jun-seok said, “It is significant that the range of metamaterials studied at the nanometer (nm, 1 billionth of a meter) size has been expanded to a size that can be used in daily life. It can be applied to various fields such as civil engineering and civil engineering,” he said.

Meanwhile, this research was carried out with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation's mid-level researcher support project, global frontier project, RLRC regional leading research center project, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' ship and offshore plant research institute's unique project.
