POSTECH Professor Jong-Hoon Gam’s team, comparison and analysis of ‘250 years’ records of drought on the Korean Peninsula

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) developed a self-calibrating effective drought index (scEDI) by a research team led by Professor Jong-Hun Gam of the School of Environmental Engineering and Researcher Chang-Gyun Park of the Environmental Research Institute. It announced on the 5th that it has compared and analyzed 250 years of precipitation records.

According to POSTECH, the effective drought index (EDI), which is currently used to determine the severity of drought, is designed to measure the state of drought on a daily basis. Since the daily precipitation record for the last 30 years is used, there is a limit that the value of the index changes depending on the set period. In other words, it was difficult to consistently compare long-term values.

Accordingly, the research team proposed a self-correcting effective drought index for the first time and analyzed the daily precipitation observed in Seoul from 1777 to 2020 with this index. Using the self-correcting effective drought index, which automatically corrects for index fluctuations over time, can consistently evaluate the frequency and intensity of drought.

In particular, in this study, the records of the daily precipitation through the annals of the Joseon dynasty, which recorded long-term history, and the daily rainfall through rain gauges are used, attracting attention. It proves the value of the detailed historical record of our ancestors, which is unprecedented.

As a result of comparing Joseon Dynasty records and modern online information search activity data, it was found that the Joseon Dynasty responded more sensitively to drought than modern times. Most of the Joseon Dynasty records and the surge in interest in modern drought were found when drought intensity was moderate (-1.4 scEDI) and severe (-2.0 scEDI), respectively.

This is a result that can be inferred that the effect of drought on society also changes according to the change in the social structure. This index, which can quantitatively evaluate the effects of drought, is expected to be used as a tool to preemptively identify social droughts in the future.

Professor Gam Jong-hoon said, “The self-correcting effective drought index proposed in this study is a drought index tailored to the climate of each era, enabling the detection and comparison of statistically consistent drought characteristics (depth, duration, and intensity). This suggests a new research methodology for social drought, which has been difficult to study, unlike physical, meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological droughts. We expect to be able to provide action plans to preemptively respond to drought.”

Meanwhile, this research result was recently published in the international academic journal ‘Journal of Hydrology’. The research was carried out with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea's Sejong Science Fellowship Project and Mid-level Research Project, and the National Disaster and Safety Research Institute's actual survey-based drought impact assessment and response technology development project.
