이 새로운 기술을 PENGUIN(Phase-Enabled Nonlinear Gating with Unbalanced INtensity, 불균형세기 위상활용 비선형 추출)이라고 명명하였다.

Instantaneous light capture without a spectrometer becomes possible

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) is a joint research team led by Professor Dong-eon Kim of the Department of Physics, Max Planck Korea-Postek Research Institute (MPK), Seung-cheol Kim, Professor of Optical Mechatronics Engineering, Pusan National University, and Dr. Alexander Gliserin It announced on the 5th that it has developed a pulse measurement technology that can be seen.

According to POSTECH, this research was carried out with support from the National Research Foundation and the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology's competency development project, and was recently published in the international journal 'Light: Science & Applications'.

As a result of this study, it is expected that the use of an expensive spectrometer will be eliminated, which will dramatically reduce the measurement cost and procedure.

In the past, a method of indirectly checking time information was used by evenly splitting one pulse into two in order to know the characteristics of instantaneous light. However, in the process of using the same pulse copy, the pulse spectrum phase was lost, making it difficult to obtain specific information.

For this reason, various optical metrology methods have been developed to directly detect or reconstruct the spectral phase by means of additional spectral measurements. Currently, the FROG or SPIDER method is the most widely used. However, the experimental process is still complicated and the use of a spectrometer is required, so the development of a simpler measurement method remains a challenge.

The team devised a strategy to break identity by weakening one of the two pulses. It was shown that the phase information is preserved when the uniformity is broken by making the intensity of the pulse unbalanced, and that perfect pulse characteristics can be grasped by extracting the phase information. Comparing the measurement results of 6 femtosecond laser pulses with this technology and the values measured with the existing FROG technology, it was proved that the agreement was very high.

This new technique was named PENGUIN (Phase-Enabled Nonlinear Gating with Unbalanced Intensity). The introduction of this new technology enables accurate measurement of extremely high-speed non-radiative electric fields. The ultra-fast non-radiative electric field is a phenomenon in which it is difficult to obtain spectral information, and accurate measurement has not been possible until now. In other words, this research result draws attention as a groundbreaking result that allows us to know the temporal characteristics of instantaneous light without spectral information.
