해당 조항은 보험금 때문에 피보험자가 살해되는 등의 악용 소지를 없애기 위해 마련되었지만, 천재지변 등 불가항력적인 불의의 사고에도 보상을 받지 못하는 상황이 발생한 것이다.

이에 김정재 국회의원(국민의힘·포항 북구)은 13일 천재지변·감염병 등 불의의 사고를 당한 경우 15세 미만이라도 보험금을 받을 수 있도록 하는 ‘상법 일부개정법률안’을 대표 발의했다고 밝혔다.

김정재 의원은 “기후위기 시대를 맞아 태풍, 집중호우 등 재난이 빈번해지고 코로나19와 같은 감염병 대유행도 우려되고 있다”면서 “단체보험의 사각지대를 없애, 천재지변 등 불의의 사고에도 대비할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
