A 'smart' microphone that doesn't miss a single word is coming

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-Hwan) announced on the 17th that a research team led by Professor Gil-Won Cho, Dr. Si-Young Lee, and Researcher Ha-Jeong Noh of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the university has developed a skin-mounted microphone that accurately detects voices even in noisy environments.

According to POSTECH, microphones such as telephones and walkie-talkies are widely used in everyday life and worksites. However, the existing microphone could not accurately detect the sound when the surrounding noise is loud, when the wind is strong, or when you have to cover your mouth with a mask.

Accordingly, the research team produced a microphone in the form of a thin patch by grafting the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology to the electret polymer material. This microphone, made of an electret polymer diaphragm, not only reduces the need for a separate battery, but also maximizes user convenience by simply attaching it to the skin of the neck.

The developed microphone detects voices using vibrations on the skin of the neck that occur when a person speaks. Even in a noisy space such as a concert hall or in a situation where the user's face is completely covered with a gas mask, the sound can be heard accurately by using the microphone.

This technology is drawing attention as a disaster response technology as it can help the communication between medical staff wearing protective suits and firefighters wearing gas masks and fire suits at the scene of a noisy accident during a respiratory disease epidemic such as Corona 19.

Furthermore, it is expected to be applied as a healthcare monitoring device to diagnose respiratory diseases by detecting the number or size of cough in real time or to diagnose vocal cord health by detecting voice usage patterns.

Meanwhile, this research was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea and was recently published as a back cover of the international academic journal Advanced Materials.
