【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=POSTECH(포항공과대학교, 총장 김무환) 수학과는 11월 4일 포항 체인지업그라운드에서 한국계 수학자로서 최초로 필즈상(Fields Medal)을 수상한 미국 프린스턴대 허준이 교수를 초청해 ‘필즈 심포지엄’을 개최한다고 31일 밝혔다.

POSTECH 수학과 공개 강좌 시리즈의 일환으로 열리는 이번 필즈 심포지엄은 허준이 교수와는 온라인 간담회 방식으로 진행되며, 뒤이어 KAIST 엄상일 교수와 인천대 이윤복 교수가 차례로 필즈상 수상자인 허준이 교수와 영국 옥스퍼드대 제임스 메이나드(James Maynard) 교수의 업적을 소개할 예정이다.

POSTECH에 따르면 지난 7월 필즈상을 수상한 허준이 교수는 대수기하학을 이용해 조합론 분야에서 오랜 난제였던 ‘리드 추측’, ‘로타 추측’ 등을 해결하는 성과를 내며 스타덤에 올랐다. 필즈상은 탁월한 업적을 낸 만 40세 이하의 수학자에게 수여하는 수학계 최고 권위의 상으로, ‘수학계 노벨상’으로 불린다.

오는 12월 9일에는 필즈 심포지엄 2부로, 다른 2022년 필즈상 수상자 중 스위스 로잔 연방공대 마리나 비아조프스카(Maryna Viazovska) 교수를 초청해 온라인 간담회를 진행한다. 이어 POSTECH 수학과 조성문·김건우 교수가 필즈상 수상자인 마리나 비아조프스카 교수와 프랑스 고등과학원 휴고 두민일 코팽(Hugo Duminil-Copin) 교수의 업적을 소개할 계획이다.

이번 심포지엄에서는 필즈상 수상자와 직접 소통하는 동시에 수학계의 우수한 연구 성과를 일반인도 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 해설 강연이 마련될 계획이다. POSTECH 구성원을 비롯해, 특히 포항시 고등학생 50명에게도 선착순으로 참여 기회가 제공된다는 점을 눈여겨볼 만하다.

 POSTECH Hosts ‘Fields Symposium’ Invited by Professor Juni Heo, the first ‘Fields Award Winner’ in Korea

 POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Kim Moo-hwan) announced on the 31st that it would hold the 'Fields Symposium' at the Pohang Changeup Ground on Nov.

 This Fields Symposium, which is held as part of the POSTECH Mathematics Department's open lecture series, will be held as an online meeting with Professor Jun-i Heo, followed by Professor Sang-il Um of KAIST and Professor Yun-bok Lee of Incheon National University, followed by Fields Medal winner Professor Heo Jun-i and Oxford University's James Maynard (UK). James Maynard's achievements will be introduced.

  According to POSTECH, Professor Heo Jun-yi, who won the Fields Award in July, rose to stardom by using algebraic geometry to solve long-standing challenges in combinatorics such as 'lead guess' and 'rota guess'. The Fields Medal is the most prestigious award in mathematics given to a mathematician under the age of 40 for outstanding achievements.

 On December 9th, as the second part of the Fields Symposium, among other recipients of the 2022 Fields Prize, Professor Maryna Viazovska of the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland, will be invited to an online meeting. Next, POSTECH Mathematics Professors Seong-moon Seong-moon and Kim Geon-woo plan to introduce the achievements of the Fields Prize winners, Prof. Marina Biazovska, and Prof. Hugo Duminil-Copin, French Academy of Advanced Sciences.

  In this symposium, an explanatory lecture will be prepared to communicate directly with the Fields Medal winner and to make it easy for the general public to understand the outstanding research achievements in mathematics. In particular, the opportunity to participate is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, including POSTECH members, and in particular, 50 high school students from Pohang City.
