In order to resolve the controversy over the detection of cyanobacteria in tap water filters, Daegu Waterworks Headquarters, the Ministry of Environment's National Institute of Environmental Research, and Daegu MBC jointly conducted a survey on tap water filters at households in Daegu, and it was found that there is no problem with tap water safety.

On the 5th, the Daegu City Waterworks Business Headquarters (Director Kim Jeong-seop) announced the results of a tap water filter survey conducted in collaboration with Daegu MBC.

In this joint investigation, filters and tap water were jointly collected from an apartment house in Hyeonpung-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu, where green substances were found in tap water filters on October 26, and detailed analysis was performed by Daegu City, the National Institute of Environmental Research, and Kyungpook National University.

The analysis method used microscopic analysis and genetic analysis to confirm the identity of the green substance found in the tap water filter, and analyzed using the LC-MS/MS method and the ELISA method to confirm that algae toxins were detected in tap water.

As a result of the joint investigation, the results of morphological analysis using a microscope and sequencing, which is genetic analysis, were consistent with those of Kocomic. It turned out to be a green algae called Cocomicosa.

Morphological analysis using a microscope was conducted by Daegu City and the National Institute of Environmental Research in accordance with the Water Pollution Process Test Standards announced by the National Institute of Environmental Research.

As a result of the analysis of green matter, the overall shape was elliptical or spherical, and the length was around 4-8㎛ and the width was around 2-4㎛. .

In microscopic analysis of tap water filters and tap water samples, no harmful cyanobacteria such as Microcystis and Anabena were found.

On the other hand, it was presumed that the reason for the occurrence of cocomicosis, a green algae in tap water filters, was its own occurrence and growth as algae growth requirements were met in domestic tap water filters.

Green algae seeds (spores) exist in all environments and can occur when conditions suitable for the growth of green algae, such as sunlight and temperature, are formed at home. identified as needing attention.

The Kyungpook National University research team, which participated in the joint investigation, also attended a survey result review meeting held by Daegu City, Daegu MBC, and the Ministry of Environment (National Institute of Environmental Research) on December 1st and said, 'The microbial communities such as green algae detected in tap water filters are not derived from tap water and It is presumed to be a problem caused by filter hygiene management'.

Director Kim Dong-jin of the National Institute of Environmental Research said, “Since 2014, when microcystin-LR was designated as a monitoring item for drinking water, about 4,900 cases of microcystin-LR in tap water from water purification plants in Daegu and other countries were investigated, and all were not detected. Eight types of algae toxins were not detected in the results of 422 investigations since 2017,” he said. told
