그는 11일 아시아포럼 21 주최 릴레이 정책토론회에 참석해 “아직 내가 도전을 해야 하는 명확한 확신을 찾지 못했다. 앞으로 더 많은 사람들의 의견을 들어보고 오늘부터 본격적으로 고민을 해본 뒤 2월 초쯤 결정을 하겠다”고 말했다. 

그러면서 “당선 가능성은 전혀 고민의 기준이 되지 않는다. 발심이 도면 꼭 도전을 해야겠다는 확신이 있어야 하는데, 그 확신이 아직 들지 않았다”고 강조했다.

이번 전당대회의 중요성과 관련해선 “윤석열 정부가 성공할 수 있느냐의 중요한 기점이 되는 선거”라며 “총선에서 승리하지 못할 경우, 윤석열 정부는 식물 정부가 된다”고 강조했다.

그러면서 “중수층, 이른바 중도와 수도권, 무당층의 민심을 가져올 수 있는 사람이라야 총선에서 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있다”고 강조하고 “친윤계라 불리는 그룹 안에서 당 대표가 탄생하면 내년 총선에서 국민의힘이 승리하는 것은 힘들다”고 거듭 주장했다. 

출마하지 않을 경우, 다른 후보를 지지하거나 출마해 다른 후보와의 연대를 할 수 있느냐는 질문에는 “그런 생각을 해보지 않았다”면서 “지금 거론되는 분들 가운데 대통령의 이름을 팔지 않는 사람은 나밖에 없다. 패거리 정치는 우리를 망친다”고 말했다.

당정 문제와 관련해서는 “다양한 정치적 의견이 있을 수 있다. 당정은 수직적 관계 아니다. 지극히 수평적인 관계가 되어야 한다”며 우회적으로 윤석열 정부의 정당 인식 개념을 비판했다.

그러면서 “이번 전당대회는 보수정당 역사상 가장 부끄러운 전당대회가 될 것”이라고 전망했다. 유승민 죽이기 위한 룰 변경과 나경원 의원에 대한 대통령실의 집단 린치(유 의원 주장) 수준의 행동을 언급한 것이란 해석이다.

공천과 관련한 구상도 제시했다. 유 전 의원은 출마를 고민 중이라는 전제를 거듭 강조하면서도 “철저하게 민심에 따르고, 투명하고 공정한 공천을 하겠다. 대통령에 아부하고 딸랑이 역할 하는 몇몇 사람들은 절대로 공천하지 않겠다. 그런 사람들이 정당도, 정권도 망친다”고 강조하고 “다만, 전략공천을 하게 된다면 그 몫은 젊은 정치인에 제공하겠다. 특히, 인재 영입 케이스같은 경우에는 우리 당의, 지지세가 강한 지역에 그분들을 공천해서 정치인으로 육성시켜 나가야 한다”고 말했다.
