조 시장은 지난 21일 경산시 중방동의 한 목욕탕에서 온탕 이용 후 세면장에서 의식을 잃고 쓰러진 70대 남성을 발견했다. 

조 시장은 바로 인공호흡을 실시하고, 이어 119에 신고 후 냉수마찰과 냉찜질 등을 시도해 환자를 살렸다. 조 시장은 “취임 후 소방서를 통해 직원들과 응급처치 교육을 받았다”며 “남성분이 처치후에도 의식이 돌아오지 않아 인공호흡을 실시했다. 한참을 하니 그분이 눈을 뜨시더라. 그순간 너무 기뻤다. 내가 시장에 당선되었을 때만큼 기뻤다”고 말했다.

남성은 이후 도착한 중산119구급대원에 의해 검사를 받았다. 구급대는“평소 저혈압이었던 환자라 응급처치를 하지 않았다면 심정지가 올 수 있는 상황이었다.”며“바로 시행한 적절한 응급처치 덕분에 환자는 의식 상태와 활력징후가 정상으로 돌아와 안전하게 집으로 돌아갔다.”고 말했다.

조현일 경산시장은 “매우 급한 상황에서 누구나 생명을 살리고자 적극적으로 응급조치를 취했을 것”이라며“응급처치라는 작은 실천을 했을 뿐인데, 이렇게 생명을 구할 수 있어 정말 기쁘게 생각한다.”고 말했다.
