(Science of the Total Environment)’지를 통해 발표됐으며 미국 NASA의 지구관측소 (Earth Observatory)를 통해 소개되기도 했다.

POSTECH Professor Hyung-Ju Lee's team evaluates nitrogen dioxide exposure through European satellites

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) recently announced the results that food processing facilities and high-rise apartment complexes with 10 or more floors can be a major source of nitrogen dioxide emission through analysis of European Space Agency satellite data, drawing attention from NASA and others in the United States. .

According to POSTECH on the 8th, Professor Hyungjoo Lee's team analyzed nitrogen dioxide emissions by building type in California using the TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument), an atmospheric component monitoring instrument mounted on the environmental observation satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), and processed food. The results were found to be the largest in the vicinity of facilities and densely populated residential areas.

The research team predicted the average nitrogen dioxide concentration in California from 2018 to 2019 and evaluated how well the observation of nitrogen dioxide concentrations at ground stations did not deviate from the actual exposure of residents to nitrogen dioxide.

In addition, by evaluating the types of buildings with high nitrogen dioxide exposure, that is, high emissions, it was confirmed that nitrogen dioxide emissions were highest in the vicinity of food processing facilities, high-rise apartments or apartment complexes with 10 or more floors. The result was the same even when traffic was taken into account.

The cause is presumed to be a combustion facility inside the apartment, such as a boiler, but residential combustion facilities have not been considered as an important cause of air pollution so far.

Professor Lee Hyeong-joo explained, “There has not been much research on high-density residential areas such as high-rise apartments, and the results of this study mean that high-density residential areas should also be dealt with in environmental policy as an important emission source of nitrogen dioxide in the future.”

Professor Lee also revealed the significance of this study, saying, “This study shows that research using satellite data can be effectively used for atmospheric environment policy, and in particular, it can be used for the evaluation and deployment of hundreds of ground observatories in Korea.”

Meanwhile, this research was published in the prestigious journal Science of the Total Environment, and was also introduced through the Earth Observatory of NASA in the United States.
