A battery that increases the driving range by more than 10 times

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) announced on the 20th that it has recently developed a silicon anode active material with a capacity 10 times higher than today through joint research with Sogang University.

According to POSTECH, a research team led by Professor Soo-Jin Park of the Department of Chemistry and Professor Yeon-Soo Kim of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering conducted a joint research with a research team led by Professor Jae-Gun Ryu of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Sogang University to replace graphite, the existing anode active material, with a stable high-capacity anode that produces more than 10 times the capacity of graphite. active material developed.

This research result was published as a cover paper in Advanced Functional Materials, an authoritative journal in the field of materials engineering.

High-capacity anode active materials such as silicon are essential for high-energy-density lithium secondary batteries as they can produce 10 times more capacity than graphite, a commercially available anode material. However, in the case of a high-capacity negative electrode active material, the volume expansion accompanying the reaction with lithium threatens battery performance and stability. In order to solve this problem, a lot of research on polymer binders capable of controlling volume expansion is being conducted.

So far, research on binders for high-capacity anode active materials has focused only on chemical cross-linking and hydrogen bonding. Chemical cross-linking is hard because the binders are bonded together by covalent bonds, but has a fatal disadvantage that once broken, it cannot be restored. On the other hand, hydrogen bonding is well known as a secondary bond between molecules that is reversible according to the difference in electronegativity, but there is a disadvantage that the strength (10-65 kJ / mol) is weak.

The charge-based polymer developed by the joint research team has the distinction of using not only hydrogen bonding but also the attraction between positive and negative charges, that is, the Coulomb force.

Coulomb's force (250 kJ/mol) is a very strong secondary bond compared to hydrogen bonding, but it can easily suppress volume expansion because it is reversible. The surface of the high-capacity negative electrode active material is mostly negatively charged, and the polymer with positive charge covers it, and the polymer with negative charge covers the polymer with positive charge. Layering charged polymers are formed.

In addition, the energy density of the lithium secondary battery was maximized by making a thick, high-capacity electrode by introducing polyethylene glycol, which facilitates the movement of lithium ions in the electrode and adjusts the physical properties.

Professor Park Soo-jin of POSTECH said, “This research is expected to greatly increase the energy density of lithium secondary batteries by introducing high-capacity anode active materials and, accordingly, increase the mileage of electric vehicles.” We expect that more geared mileage will be possible,” he said.

Meanwhile, this research was carried out with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT, the nano and material technology development project, and the future technology laboratory project.
