POSTECH Professor Chang-Hyeok Choi's team finds a clue to extend the lifespan of fuel cell platinum catalysts
POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) announced on the 23rd that a research team led by Professor Chang-hyeok Choi of the Department of Chemistry recently explained the chemical corrosion phenomenon of platinum that deteriorates the durability of hydrogen fuel cells and found a clue to extend the lifespan of fuel cells. .
According to POSTECH, a fuel cell is a device that produces electricity by reacting fuel (such as hydrogen) with oxygen, and has a high energy conversion efficiency (around 75%) without emitting greenhouse gases, drawing attention as a key technology for realizing a carbon-neutral policy.
The use of highly reactive platinum catalysts is essential for fuel cells, but platinum can corrode in a reaction environment, shortening the lifespan of fuel cells. In order to improve the durability of fuel cells, it is necessary to identify the cause of platinum corrosion and to have an accurate understanding of the platinum corrosion process to solve it.
Through advanced electrochemical spectroscopy, the research team revealed that instantaneous voltage disturbances at the millisecond level cause corrosion of platinum, and platinum, a precious metal, can be chemically melted away.
It was confirmed that this phenomenon is a general phenomenon that can occur not only in pure platinum catalysts, but also in platinum-nickel and platinum-cobalt catalysts, which are high-performance fuel cell catalysts used in commercial fuel cells.
Professor Choi Chang-hyeok, who led the research, said, “Through the short voltage disturbance, we were able to closely observe the chemical corrosion process of the platinum catalyst, a key component of fuel cells, as well as various methods to prevent corrosion of the platinum catalyst for the supply of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. We were able to suggest strategies, etc.”, revealing the significance of the study.
Meanwhile, this research result was carried out with support from the 'Future Material Discovery' and 'Group Research Support' projects promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and was published in 'JACS Au', an international journal published by the American Chemical Society.
