POSTECH research team develops a porous material that selectively absorbs carbon dioxide and harmful gases

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) announced on the 24th that the research team led by Professor Jisoon Lim of the Department of Physics and Professors Gilwon Cho and Seokhwan Park of the Department of Chemical Engineering succeeded in synthesizing a porous organic-inorganic hybrid compound that can effectively capture carbon dioxide and various harmful gases.

According to POSTECH, the newly developed material (SPOIC, Sparsely Pillared Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Compound) is an organic-inorganic hybrid compound with many ultra-fine pores and a large surface area. The process has the advantage of being safe, simple and environmentally friendly.

This material is in the form of securing the maximum space between layers by inserting organic molecules between the layers of aluminum hydroxide having a layered structure at wide intervals. Molecules entering the empty space between layers combine with the inner surface and are stably adsorbed or captured.

It has excellent adsorption, storage, or removal performance of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, hydrogen, various harmful substances and carcinogens (benzene, toluene, benzopyrene, etc.), fine dust-causing substances (nitrous oxide, etc.), heavy metals, and radioactive substances. It can also be used as a kind of platform material to which additional functional groups can be attached depending on the purpose of application.

Prof. Jisoon Lim, the leader of the research team, recently participated in the ‘XPRIZE Carbon Removal’, an international contest to capture and remove carbon dioxide, with the invention of this material as an opportunity. The contest was made possible by Tesla founder Elon Musk donating $100 million in prize money to the XPRIZE Foundation, and a team led by Professor Lim Ji-soon participated in the contest by obtaining certification for competition. These contents have recently been introduced through public TV media.

This material has recently been patented in the United States following Korea and Japan. Professor Lim Ji-soon said, “The invented material is expected to be widely used for capturing carbon dioxide and other harmful substances.”
