POSTECH Professor Jun-Seok Noh's team realizes the world's largest amount of meta-hologram information

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) is a research team led by Prof. Joon-Seok Noh of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Dr. Trevon Badloe of the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence, Joo-Hoon Kim of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor Soon-Ae So of the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Korea University. It was announced on the 30th that it has succeeded in implementing a meta-hologram with the world's largest amount of information by breaking the limits of the existing metasurface information amount through an artificial intelligence-based reverse engineering method.

Existing single metasurfaces have limitations in realizing 3D holograms or multi-color holograms by inputting various holograms with a maximum amount of information of about 2 to 3.

Based on the reverse engineering method, the research team increased the amount of information that can be input on a single metasurface to a maximum of nine for multicolor holograms and a maximum of 18 for monochromatic holograms.

As a result, holographic image encoding independent of each wavelength of the three primary colors of light on each surface implemented images of various colors, not black and white, with a sense of depth along the plane.

In addition, the world's first 3D airplane hologram containing 3D information could be launched by encoding images differently depending on the distance.

Now, metasurfaces can go one step further from implementing simple holographic images to implementing complex and diverse holograms. Meta-hologram technology, which can perfectly reproduce vivid scenes, is in the limelight as a next-generation display technology.

This study is significant in that it showed the possibility that metaholograms can be used in more diverse places such as 3D displays.

Meanwhile, this research was supported by POSCO, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, Future Promising Convergence Technology Pioneer, Strategic Nano Material Technology Development, Future Research Lab, Mid-level Researcher Support, RLRC Regional Innovation Leading Research Center, Global Frontier, Sejong Science Fellowship Project and was published in the journal Advanced Materials.
