19일 대구시에 따르면 신천 수변공원화 사업은 연간 600만 명 이상의 시민이 찾는 신천을 쾌적하고 편안한 휴식공간과 다양한 즐거움이 있는 공간으로 만들기 위해 총사업비 1,296억 원을 투입했다.

우선 대구시는 올해 10월부터 신천 둔치 대봉교~상동교 좌안 구간에 느티나무 등 수목 500여 주 식재하고, 내년까지 도심 구간에 총 3천여 그루의 수목을 식재해 ‘푸른 신천숲’을 조성한다.

숲길, 쌈지숲, 미니공원으로 조성되는 ‘푸른 신천숲’은 시민들에게 물소리를 들으며 걷고 싶은 녹음길을 조성하고, 바쁜 일상 속에서 잠시 휴식하며 즐길 수 있는 공간으로 제공할 계획이다.

또 신천숲 조성과 관련해 안전 사각지대를 면밀히 분석해 내년까지 가로등 900주와 CCTV 22대를 추가로 설치하고, 시민들의 안전뿐만 아니라 신천 둔치의 야간경관도 개선해 누구나 안심하며 산책할 수 있도록 할 예정이다.

변화되는 신천의 수려한 경관을 한눈에 조망할 수 있도록 대봉교 인근에 리버뷰 테라스를 조성해 수변에서 감성을 느끼며 힐링할 수 있는 복합문화공간도 현재 실시설계 용역 중이다.

문화공간인 신천 수변무대도 올해 9월 중 마무리가 된다. 더 많은 시민이, 더 다채롭게, 더 즐겁게 신천을 즐길 수 있도록 문화예술, 행사 등을 대폭 확대할 예정이며 클래식 공연 및 소규모 버스킹 공연도 이루어지고 사계절 내내 음악과 예술로 가득한 신천을 만든다는 계획이다.

특히, 그동안 시민들의 호응이 좋았지만 매년 설치와 철거가 반복되었던 간이 물놀이장과 스케이트장은 내년부터 사계절 활용이 가능한 고정식 물놀이장으로 운영돼 예산이 절감되고, 전국 최초로 하천 둔치에 파도풀도 도입될 예정이다.

고정식 물놀이장은 겨울엔 스케이트장으로 봄·가을엔 복합문화공간으로 전환해 다양한 시설을 운영하는 수변공간으로 변모시킬 계획이며, 1년여의 공사 기간을 거쳐 내년 7월 개장을 목표로 하고 있다.

홍준표 대구시장은 “푸른 신천숲, 사계절 물놀이장, 리버뷰 테라스 등 보고, 듣고, 체험하며 오감이 즐거운 공간으로 만들고, 안전시설도 추가로 설치할 것”이라며, “신천을 보다 안전하고, 시민들이 일상에서 행복을 느낄 수 있는 대구만의 명소로 조성하겠다”고 말했다.
