포항제철소는 1989년 3월 스테인리스 반제품 슬라브를 첫 생산한데 이어 같은 해 9월에는 제품을 초도 출하해, 국내 유일 스테인리스 열연 코일 공급처로서 34년간 한국 스테인리스 시장을 주도해왔다.

최근 냉천 범람으로 인한 피해를 극복하고 정상화에 성공한 데 이어, 18일 포항제철소는 스테인리스 누적 조강생산량 5천만 톤을 달성하는 쾌거를 이루어냈다. 이는 냉연 코일 길이로 환산할 경우 526만km로, 지구 둘레를 131여 바퀴 감을 수 있는 수준이다.
