지역 정가는 전반기 의회를 이끌었던 이만규 의장(중구2)의 연임 도전 가능성을 높게 점치고 있다.

후반기 의장단 선거는 전반기와 마찬가지로 이만규 의장(중구2)과 김대현 의원(서구1)의 2파전이 전망된다.

특히 전반기 의장단 선거에서 재적의원 과반의 표심을 얻은 바 있는 이만규 의장이 유리한 고지를 선점할 것이라는 분석이 이어진다.

하지만 대구시의회에서 4년간 의회 의장을 연속해서 맡은 전력이 없는데다 이 의장의 연임에 명분이 없다는 지적이 제기되고 있어 결과는 섣불리 예측할 수 없다.

앞서 이만규 의장 편에 섰던 의원들이 여전히 그의 손을 들어줄 것인지도 미지수다. 재적의원 32명 중 초선이 반 이상을 차지하는 대구시의회 의원들이 2년간의 경험을 통해 선수 교체의 필요성을 느꼈을 수 있다는 것이 대구시의회 관계자의 전언이다.

그러나 유력한 라이벌인 김대현 의원이 ‘우군’을 충분히 확보한 것으로도 보이지 않아 물밑 경쟁은 어느 때보다 치열할 것으로 예상된다.

지역 정치권 관계자는 “후반기에는 대구시정을 견제할 수 있는 인물이 의장으로 선출되어 대구시의회가 거수기라는 오명을 벗고 제 역할을 해낼 수 있기를 바란다”고 말했다.
