10일 포항시에 따르면 호미반도 경관농업 단지는 지난 2018년부터 조성하기 시작해 매년 10만 평 이상의 유채꽃·유색보리·메밀꽃·해바리기 등 다채로운 볼거리를 제공해왔으며, 올해는 약 50ha(15만 평) 규모로 조성하고 있다.

대규모 메밀꽃 단지는 해맞이광장 바로 옆에 조성돼 있어 동해 바다와 함께 순백의 메밀을 감상할 수 있는 특별함이 있다.

호미곶 경관농업 단지의 메밀은 지난 5월에 파종해 6월부터 만발해 많은 관광객들이 찾고 있으며, 메밀 외에 해바라기 꽃밭도 조성하고 있어 볼거리가 더욱 풍성해질 예정이다.

포항시는 특색있는 경관 작물을 재배하면서 도시민의 볼거리를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 경관작물을 활용한 포항농업의 신성장동력을 발굴해 지역 관광산업 활성화와 농가소득 창출에도 힘써나갈 방침이다.

정경원 농업기술센터소장은 “유채꽃에 이어 메밀꽃도 성공적으로 개화해 많은 관광객들이 찾고 있다”며 “앞으로도 다양한 볼거리 조성과 지역경제 활성화를 위해 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
