이강덕 시장은 이날 간담회에 참석한 학도의용군 회원 8명을 만나 감사의 마음을 전하고 건의사항을 청취했으며, 회원들은 참전 당시를 회상하며 꽃다운 나이에 산화한 학우들을 추모했다.

학도의용군은 6.25전쟁 당시 군번도 없이 학생의 신분으로 전쟁에 참전한 의용병으로 포항 지역 학도의용군은 기계, 안강, 영덕, 포항여중 전투 등에 참전, 국군의 승리에 기여했다.

권정열 학도의용군 포항지회장은 “나라를 위해 목숨까지 바친 학도의용군의 희생을 잊지 말고 꼭 기억해달라”며 “소중한 자리를 만들어 준 포항시에 감사하며, 호국선열들의 정신을 계승·발전 시키는 데 더욱 앞장서달라”고 말했다.

이강덕 시장은 “조국을 위해 청춘을 바친 학도의용군의 숭고한 애국심을 계승하기 위해 노력하겠다”며, “우리 시민들이 굳건한 안보 의식을 가질 수 있도록 역할을 해줘 감사드리며, 호국 도시 포항의 위상이 유지될 수 있도록 관심을 갖고 도와주길 당부드린다”고 말했다.
