조원진 당대표는 15일 “선진 민주국가인 미국에서 대통령 유세중 총격사건이 발생한 것은 매우 충격적인 사건으로 결코 용납할 수 없는 범죄”라면서 “도널드 트럼프 전 미국 대통령의 빠른 쾌유를 기원하며 무고한 시민의 희생에 애도를 표한다”고 말했다. 

그는 “정치가 극단적으로 치달으면 반대 세력 간의 엄청난 갈등과 싸움이 발생된다. 진영간, 진영내 물고 물리는 동물의 정치가 되는 것”이라며 “사회 곳곳에 가짜뉴스가 퍼지고, 정치인들이 이러한 가짜뉴스, 극단의 증오정치를 조장하고 이용하는 경우도 많다”고 전했다.

그러면서 “이제는 증오의 정치가 아닌 포용의 정치를 실현해야 한다. 국민을 통합할 수 있는 통합의 정치를 해야 한다”고 말했다.

또한 “증오정치, 극단의 정치는 가장 큰 민주주의의 적”이라며 “극성 팬덤에 사로잡혀서 자기 진영만을 위한 정치에 빠져서는 안된다”고 강조했다.
