군에 따르면 올해 전국 대부분의 해수욕장은 노무라입깃해파리와 보름달물해파리 등 독성을 가진 해파리의 대량 출몰로 흥행에 큰 피해가 있을 것으로 우려됐지만, 영덕군의 경우 누적 방문 15만여 명을 기록해 피서객들의 발길을 붙잡는 데 성공했다.

같은 기간 영덕군은 긴급 예산을 투입해 해파리 퇴치에 나서는 한편, 해수욕장 해파리 이중 차단망 설치, 해파리 제거 안전관리요원 보호 슈트 지급 등의 선제적인 대응으로 해파리 피해를 최소화했다.

김광열 영덕군수는 “여러 악재 속에서도 깨끗한 바다와 수려한 백사장을 잊지 않고 영덕을 다시 찾아주신 많은 분께서 실망하시지 않도록 해수욕장 환경과 컨디션을 최상으로 유지할 수 있도록 노력해 나가겠다”고 전했다.

한편, 영덕군은 관할 해수욕장 일제 폐장 이후에도 해수욕장을 찾는 방문객을 위해 안전관리 체계와 점검을 오는 25일까지 유지하고 수상 안전요원을 추가로 배치해 안전사고에 대비할 계획이다.
