【브레이크뉴스 영덕】박영재 기자=영덕군은 지난 27일 환경부가 경북 동해안 국가지질공원 중 영덕군 지역을 생태관광지역으로 신규 지정했다고 28일 밝혔다.

생태관광지역은 환경적으로 보전 가치가 있고 생태계 보호의 중요성을 체험·교육할 수 있는 지역을 대상으로 환경부와 문화체육관광부가 협의해 지정하는 환경친화적 생태관광 프로그램 육성 제도다.

생태관광지역으로 지정되면 3년간 생태관광 프로그램 개발과 운영을 위해 국비가 지원되며, 생태관광 기반 시설 설치를 위한 국비 사업이 우선 지원되고 자연환경 해설사 양성, 주민 역량 강화 등의 지원도 받게 된다.

영덕군은 지난 8월 환경부에 생태관광지역을 신청했으며, 환경부는 신청받은 17곳의 후보지 중 10월 서면평가와 현장평가를 거쳐 10곳으로 추린 후 지난 18일 후보 지역의 발표평가를 토대로 심사위원회의 최종 심사에서 영덕군 국가지질공원을 포함한 5곳을 생태관광지역으로 지정했다.

이로써 영덕군은 동해안 국가지질공원에 속해 있는 영덕해맞이공원, 경정리 해안, 죽도산, 영덕대부정합, 고래불해안, 철암산 화석산지, 원척리 화강암 등 7곳의 지질명소로 보유하게 됐다.

특히 영덕군 지역은 해안선을 따라 지질학적 가치가 높은 명소가 이어져 있고, 이와 함께 해안트레킹을 즐길 수 있는 블루로드가 조성돼 있어 이를 즐기려는 관광객들의 관심이 모이고 있다.

이에 영덕군은 지난 7월 환경부와 국토교통부 협업사업인 ‘지속 가능한 해안권 개발 및 생태관광 활성화 사업’ 대상지로도 선정돼 지속적인 컨설팅과 네트워크를 통해 생태관광 프로그램을 개발하고 있다.

또한 영덕 국가지질공원이 포함된 경북 동해안 세계지질공원이 지난 9월 유네스코 세계지질공원 이사회의 심의를 통과해 내년 5월 유네스코 정기총회의 최종 승인이 기대되고 있어 지질학적 가치를 기반한 생태관광산업 육성에 탄력이 붙을 것으로 기대된다.

김광열 영덕군수는 “이번 생태관광지역 지정으로 지질명소와 블루로드를 연계한 생태관광의 중심지로 자리매김할 수 있도록 지역의 역량을 모으고 있다”며, “유려한 영덕의 해안선을 따라 특색있는 생태체험과 관광을 접목한 프로그램을 개발해 가치 높은 자연유산을 보존하면서 지역 활성화에 이바지할 수 있도록 온 힘을 다하겠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
