개통된 동해선 철도는 ITX-마음 열차가 오전 5시 28분 강릉을 출발해 영덕을 거쳐 포항까지 2시간 43분이 걸렸으며, 기존 노선인 강릉~삼척 구간은 약 1시간, 신규 노선인 삼척~영덕 구간은 150km 속도로 달려 1시간 18분이 걸렸다.

영덕군은 동해선 철도가 완전 개통됨에 따라 대도시인 부산·동대구와 연결되는 ITX-마음 열차가 하루 5회, 누리 열차가 하루 3회 경유해 지역의 교통 환경이 크게 개선되고 지역의 관광산업이 더욱 성장하는 기회가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

특히, 새롭게 들어선 삼척~포항 구간 166.3km 중 영덕군에 포함된 역사가 5개소나 포진돼 있어 전국 10대 관광지로 손꼽히는 영덕군의 접근성이 더욱 좋아질 것으로 평가된다.
